Just need a new bit of pipe to stop the coolant leak and then I'm set for the road! I didn't really put a line of hylomar around the head gasket - just little spots to keep it attached to the head as I positioned it. It shouldn't leak or fail should it?

too late now put it all on careful, tightened it down a bit. Now im gonna wait about 15 minutes like it says before i tighten it right down. trouble is it says in the book that they should be tightened to 6 to 8 lb/ ft but my torque wrench only goes dow to 20 will it balls up if i do over tighten them, cos that may be what i done.

fer the rocker cover bolts , you need to apply common sense to tightening them. most talk wench dint go that low and unless your a profeessional or reet keen armchewer you can't really justify the cost of one.
so use a short rachet and socket, if you don't have a short rachet then do not hold yer rat**** at the end because its reet easy to apply to much oomphs and snap the bolts..

now nip em up evenly and once they are all nipped up, you then have to judge how far to tighten them, which is something not easily to describe over the internet.

just use yer noggin, they are only small bolts/nut so don't over do it. if you do get a slight leak just nip em up a bit more.

cheers slob. That seems to have done the trick. The gasket seems to have slipped out one side a bit but theres no oil comeing out now, so fingers crossed ive done it. Thanks slob and Landyzone for your assistance. Ended up a lot cheaper job than a tdi conversion to solve the problem,Ay. Least the wife is still talking to me, dont know if thats a good thing or a bad one though. Which she wouldnt have been if it had ended up a conversion. Thanks again Slob.

Well I've been for a good run and all seems well, the buggers is still leaking oil from the middle nut at the top of the rocker cover though :( Does yours do this Denis the menace? I was hoping that new pistons / rings would stop this problem. Ay well

ave forgot what injun yer got, but if its the same as the series cover it has three domed nuts holding it on. under the nuts is a metal covered rubber ring. if the rubber dies they leak.

They do, if you ant got the propper washer try a fibre washer or even a steel washer with some gobbo on.

If you reeeeeeely want to tighten the rocker cover nuts to the correct torque, Get a piece of tube a foot long an slide it over the handle of your rat**** drive thing an position a spring balance a foot from the centre of the socket on the nut, if you pull the spring balance till it reads however many pounds the torque setting is then you should be cock on. On the other hand you could just tighten it till it feels right.

Ill put a dot of hylomar around them and then try that. Does that mean then that in theory, these (12J) engines are always burning a little bit of oil?
