Hi folks.

Not sure where to put this request for info, so put it on here...

Got a front bumper winch rated to 12000lb, have removed the bailing twine that was on it, which quite frankly was that bad I wouldn't have used for a rope swing!....the end of which was gaffer taped to the winch!!

Just bought some 10tonne rated (more than enough) steel rope with a hook on one end. The other end is just cut and sealed to stop any poss of fraying.

Question is; Whats the best way to fasten the end of this steel rope to the winch drum? I'm thinking looping the end over back to itself and clamping/bolting??

Need help....and ideally a link to relevant clips/ fasteners that'll do the job??

lay the wire across the drum first, from one side to the other and then reel it up over that. it'll hold just fine. wouldnt normally use a winch with less than 1 layer left on it. hope that makes sense

oh right?! didn't realise that was the common way to do it.

I can see your point though, as any fastener/clamp is not gonna lay flat properly to the drum.

thanks

With a decent quality winch, the cable goes into a hole in the drum and is secured by a grub screw. With the cheap tat chinese winches the cable is secured by a bolt in the side of the drum (look for the threaded hole). It's 5 wraps of cable that need to remain on the drum, Not 1 layer.

LOL!...ok.

There's a grub screw but no hole....or maybe I've not spotted it. I need to have a closer look at the drum.

thanks guys. will have a look in the daylight tommorrow

and make sure the wire is the right diameter for the drum, if it's too thick it will put permenent set in the wire and lead to splintering.

Its 8mm diameter aviation wire as recommended for the drum...It was delivered on a cardboard tube smaller than the drum dia, so wouldn't think I'll have a problem, but thanks for the heads-up.

Thanks for the advice chaps. cheers
