Small end bearing on number 4 cylinder is fooked is my guess.

Get yerself a stethescope (or long handled screwdriver to use as a stethescope) and apply it to all parts of the engine (top end and bottom end on each cylinder). By the number of taps a minute my guess is top end.

Tip tap RAT I thought this was you..

Cheers!

N° 1 cylinder being the first one as you are stood in front?

Little end bearing would'nt cause the smoke though, would it?

Tried the screw-driver and you can just hear tapping ever where you listen.

NO. 1 cylinder as in you have 4 of em but only one of em is faulty. count the taps.

YES

Tried the screw-driver and you can just hear tapping ever where you listen.

You aint doing it right then.

Cheers Ratty

Would just changing the little end bearing be a bodge? I.e I know that it would be best to change rings, hone the bores, big ends but like i said it's a shed and need to work out if it's worth doing.

If it turns out to be the bearing your cylinder will be badly scored. I bought a 300tdi with the same noise and smoke as you describe. I drove it from Edinburgh back to Bristol, and then carried on driving it like it for a further 4 or 5 months while I sourced a replacement engine. It never let me down or got any worse in that time.

When the new engine went in, I stripped the old one to get my money back. Number 4 cylinder was badly scored and you could wobble the piston just by resting your fingers on the top and pushing from side to side.

You should be able to confirm it by getting a simple pressure test done.

Engine has done nearly 200 000 miles, alternatives

1: Change little end bearing and nothing else as long as bores not knacked.

2:Full engine rebuild!

3: Second hand engine.(Now that's not going to happen cheap here in France!)

4: Set fire to it :D

Perso don't like doing half a job, i.e Just changing rings with out doing the head, as you can be sure that the "up" in compression is going to blow somthing else where:mad:

Excellent way to post your problem........... im impressed....... :):):):)

What do 200 tdi engines go for in the U.K, how easy does a 300 tdi lump drop in???

why not get one of these before you replace an engine for nothing. All we can do is help guide you with what to look out for. We aren't right all the time. If you are lucky we may be wrong on your problem.;)
