Hi all!

Any one in the Bracknell area any good with 19j 2.5 TD engines in an old 1989 90 and willing to take a look/give advice on mine?.

After a light restoration I just can't get her to run properly without it smoking badly and running away with itself when you press the accelerator. When this happens, it knocks like crazy and puts out clouds of thick grey smoke with black oily spray at the exhaust (unburnt diesel?). Only way to stop it is to switch ignition off (quickly! Its a bloody terrifying noise when it happens!)

When you first start the engine (from cold) , it runs well with little smoke and you can fully depresss accelator without any knocking (revs up and down fine).

Once it starts to warm up the problems start to appear, as described above.

It will happily tick over beautifully as long as you don't rev it.

I had to a replace the fuel injector pump as previous was full of sediment and wreaked. Prior to sucking in a ton of sediment, it ran and worked fine.

Fuels system all been flushed and new filter put in.

Tappets all adjusted, timing all done using pins to lock in right position (flywheel and fuel injector pump), everything aligned and checked plus re checked.

Any ideas?

Yes, I will ditch it and get a 200TDi, but not yet. Need to get this running first.

Guessing its the replacement fuel pump but starts and idles fine?

All ideas greatly appreciated!

Cheers !

Check your oil level in case it is overfull but it sounds like you have either got a very worn engine or turbo with a seal failure. Be careful it is burning its own oil and you might find that one day it wont stop when you turn the ignition off and it will destroy itself. YouTube 'diesel runaway'.

Cheers Kwakerman!. Further investigation shows its cracked a piston.

Bought a 200TDi to go in it instead... Not throwing money at 19j. Still, it managed 135,000 miles, is that a new 19j record? ;-)
