are all garages the same or are there any decent mechanics left in this world.after the local garage were supposed to have replaced my rear drums and pads on me 90 a while ago when the diff exploded i replaced the whole axle with a disc brake one,the pads were down to the metal and drums were all scored this was bad enough but how is this for robbin me and shafting me up the arse at the same time,me clutch went 500 miles ago,so the garage charged me £400 to supply and fit a brand new 5 piece clutch kit, well we did the 200 tdi engine swap at the weekend and guess what the arseholes replaced the clutch fork that was lovely and shiny, the thrust bearing was shagged to bits and the clutch plate was worn down level to the wear marks.we measured a new clutch plate and it was 10mm..the second hand plate off the 200 tdi which had done 90,000miles was 8mm and the so called new clutch in mine was 5.5mm i was feckin livid,i want to go to the garage monday but i know i will lose me temper and do more harm than good, whats the best way to go about this(legally of course) he done everything cash with no reciept but to say ive been shafted is an understatement:mad:

Trading Standards
but without a receipt - you dont stand a chance - they only need to say "Wot work" and its yo word against theirs.

One of the probs with cash only....

i have taken pics.i did think of ringing him and saying i got a problem with the clutch slipping and ask if its under guarantee and see what he says.dont want to fully name them yet as this issue i will take all the way and dont want to get done meself for the old slander thing but the name of the company is if a white sheet of paper has nothin on it it is called p---n white paper thats the 1st part and the second part is land r---r so they called p---n r---rs in tidworth wiltshire

i bought a 1988 defender 90 with a **** load of recipts for works on it and new parts. they guy who sold me the mota was usless at auto repairs but used a local firm to do all his land rover repairs. upon stripping the defender to its chassis i noticed a few of the recipts for new parts didnt tally with what i was seeing ! brake lines from front to rear replaced ? not judging by what i was seeing they was the origional ones, the crafty fcukers had charged for work that was never done ! this wasnt the only thing i picked up on going through the recipts.
looks like your not the only one thats been ripped. i would go to the garage and demand your money back and if they refuse go to trading standards. the garage has more to loose than you do, payed in cash ? hmmm bet that went straight into the back pocket, tax man would like to know that ! hehehehe theres more than one way to skin a tw*t :)

Are they all like that in the west country?

My brother in law came up fom Frome for a few days and asked me to check the washers on his Fiesta. Whist I was under the bonnet I noticed that the coolant was low so I put about 3 litres of anti freeze in it, I also out of habit, checked the oil:eek: none on the stick. I put just short of 3 litres of oil it it for him as well.
When I asked him why he didnt look after his car better he said that it was serviced twice a year by a local garage and had not long since been done. He had been charged for an oil change and filters but the oil filter was rusty round the edges and I doubt if the 1.8 diesel had consumed that much oil as he dosnt use it very much as a rule, it would have been smoking badly anyway.
He said it dosnt rattle now when I start it up:eek:

Robbing thieving bastards:mad:

When my dad had his garage he was always doing work which he had quoted for but the customer went somewhere cheaper and got shafted!
They then come back with thier tails between thier legs asking for my dad to do it!
My dad would not drop his prices for anyone, his motto is "they are paying for 40 yrs experience as well as the job".
You get what you pay for.

If you use garages you are laying yourself open to being ripped off. Simple as that. They will charge for work they haven't done. They will use second hand parts and charge for new. They will make stuff up that needs doing, usually something that will make your car unsafe so you're scared into letting them fix it and grateful they spotted it before you and your family were all killed. My mate was sacked as an MOT tester for passing too many! If you can find a garage that doesn't rob you and is reliable and honest, support them and pass the word about them they deserve to succeed. Likewise tell everyone you know about the bad ones.

ok i have a great garage for landys never had any work done myself only MOTs but others report great things they are an old family run garage very landy experienced knows what to look for on an Mot not your usual car mechanics

Will understand if you block it as spam but,

Old dairy garage near Tring Herts not the cheapest but worth every penny for my MOT Jai

its not only in UK I owned a Garage/service station in OZ for 12 years, and some of the things I saw on vehicles I towed in that had been "serviced" before heading out into the outback would defy belief. At first I used to give them a courtesy call as one garage to another, but with the couldnt care less replies I got I stopped doing it. I just used to take photos, and give them a statement , being a JP helped it carry a bit more weight . But in your situation proof is going to be your big problem , as you dont have a neutral witness, just warning before you throw good money after bad.
The tax man/ customs and excise (vat) is probably the only way you will get any cost effective satisfaction . JMHO

p.s. re garages , when you find a good one stick with it , word of mouth is best . :amen: ;)

that sounds like an absolute ****hole

not all garages are like it, i work at a good one, your experience is awefull and you should try and do something about it, if not for your sake then for others

you will need your receipt/invoice for the work then ring your local trading standards office for advice, they'll let you know the way forward

tell him you need a receipt as you are self employed and you need to keep records of everything.

when you get this , then you can kick up a fuss.

Shifty's revenge tips - issue 1.

Dont get mad. Just get even.

Get yourself a can of expanding foam, an aerosol of silicone PTFE spray, and a tube of super glue.
If you dont get any satisfaction from them go back and glue all the locks you can find at the garage (including recovery trucks). It is inconvenient and takes time and money for a lock smith to drill and replace the locks before they can do any more shoddy work. Repeat as necessary.

Spray the windscreens of their motors with the slicone PTFE. It makes the cars undrivable because you cant see where you are going (windscreen washer makes it worse) and it is a bast*rd to clean off.

Get a long tube for the expanding foam (windscreen washer pipe) and fill the back exhaust boxes on any of their cars or recovery trucks. Its impossible to get the foam out and the motors wont start. They will have to change the exhaust boxes to sort it.

Get your mates to book their motors in for major work or services and then dont show. Plays havoc with their appointments which is costing them time and money. After a short while they wont know what is a genuine appointment or a fake.

If they do recovery work ring up and give them false location details. Waste their time and diesel. Offer to pay cash on collection and their greed will win out.

The above are silent but effective. Just be careful of any CCTV.

Childish I know but very satisfying.

Watch this space for isuue 2.
