Hi - I have an 05 Plate 110 with 150km on the clock. I’ve just had a new LOF clutch fitted but the garage is saying they think the servo has gone, not the clutch itself. It was fitted with a Red Booster in 2019 and the car has not been used for off roading. Is this likely? All advice appreciated on an expensive issue!

Welcome to the group. I'm sorry to hear you are having issues.
Do you have any mechanical experience ?
Could you (for example) determine if there is a vacuum at the Red Booster servo ?

Can you check the fluid level in the master cylinder and check the bell housing drain to see if you have any fluid leaking from the slave ?

is this a TD5 engine ?

Hi, I’m not technical unfortunately but it is a TD5 engine. I think the mechanic has checked all of the above though

By any chance has truck been fitted with LOF spring on the clutch pedal ?
Yes, the original spring that was use with the servo snapped and a mechanic on an earlier job fixed it but didn’t replace it. That seemed to do the trick but it was recommended that I get a new clutch completely but now I fear I’m back to square one.

Take spring off and try without. It is a known issue that the LOF pressure reducing spring can sometimes give the issues you have.
This is what I got from the mechanic (I’m going in to collect the car tomorrow):
  1. We are recommending the clutch servo unit be removed and replaced with a standard clutch master cylinder. This is due to 2x issues we have identified. The first being it is over actuating, hence the feeling the brake peddle is being sucked to the floor. Secondly, even at fully depressed position, the clutch is not being fully released, as if the connected mechanism inside the clutch servo doesn’t have enough travel. Both these issues are down to the clutch servo unit.

By the sounds of it the spring may be at fault. Fit a standard spring and see what happens.

If you have a clutch servo then I doubt you need a LOF pedal spring or even the standard TD5 spring. I have a clutch servo and have a spring like in the link. Although the clutch is very light the downside is there is no real bite point, making hill starts rather difficult. Normal driving conditions it is fine.
Red Booster are meant to be quite good I think, must be some fitting instructions on the Web somewhere.
I wonder if I should fit a standard spring?

Thanks. So it could be just the spring (which was the original issue) and a £2 replacement rather than the £800 job the garage is recommending?
