im looking to mount a sterio and posibly a cb radio in the roof of my s3, how do people do this? i presume its a case of buying a cradle for the radio and bolting it to the roof. this shouts out negative vibes to me as it involves drillling holes in my roof and letting water into the landy via the electric sterio. Hows this done? with sh** loads of sealent or are there any other methods?

Cheers Adam

how about spanning the ledge that runs at door top level round the cab .and mounting the radio to that ???

Bit awkward for driving though. He's going to bang his head everytime he brakes. I've screwed a lump of 1/2" ply to the back of the roof lining. so I can screw through the roof lining and into the wood.

ive got 6mm mdf mounted in the roof of my series 3, used long self tapping screws into the 3 channels that run the length of the roof, covered it with black felt like material,

I've stuck me head unit (the stereo bit) in a halfords cradle under the dash in front of the gear knob, works a treat and you can hide most of the wiring behind the dash, also, surprisingly it doesn't get smaked by the gear knob.

possibly a problem for the overly tall ,wouldnt be a problem for a middle earth dweller like meself tho ,so if you are overly tall its your own fault ......:D

my panel follows the slope of the roof, the panels not as wide as the roof cuz of the curve on the sides , glued camping mats on first though, then the panelm on top, keeps the heat in, this weather

i dont want to mount it under the dash because im quite prone to a bit of wadeing and i often go to deep, haha, so im thinking roof, had it in a cubby box before but im now donning the truck cab onsomble and need the middle seat! looked at cutting it into the dash but its to shallow for my deep head unit. I realy do think the roof is the logical position. im likeing the plywood idea, and the camping mating sounds like a good idea, i had carpet in my lwb roof that did the trick. Thanks for the help everyone, but if there are any other ideas please add them before i get the drill out at the weekednd lol.

I mounted my CB on on hard top. Two stainless screws, washers and a spot of silicone and paint. Not the best idea i've had. PM me if you want installation pics from my S3.

Not sure if mr MOT man will like the mike cable hanging down in front of the rear view mirror though! and your right, watch out for that roof condensation if it's not a twin skin, safari or CSW lined top.

Here is a picture of how i have done it with a piece of Alluminium.
