Hi all

MERRY XMAS !!!!

Im new here ,this is my first post so hope everything i ask is within the forum rules , I'm Griff ,i love playing with cars but this is my first ever 4x4 and it looks like i may have major problems......

i have just got hold of my first freelander its a 2002 td4 ,134000 miles and i have no service book so have no idea what services it has had done ,all i know is it's had new front brakes and disks ,also new handbrake cable ,which is far too tight in my opinion (only goes to one click and its hard to get to there )

Anyway here is my problem, I'm hoping you guys can help me with!!

Right here goes, the car sounds like a plane taking off from the inside ,when driving it is so so loud ,it's a very strange noise almost like a grinding sound coming from under the car (somewhere near middle of car ,also when changing gear or putting foot down you get a sound like something clunks/bangs)

The grinding noise is something to do with the transmission I think ,but even when free wheeling its there ,and stays until you come to a complete stop!!!!

It gets quieter the faster you go , I'm assuming its either a dry part? joint? bearing? dif ?

I really like the car ,it will be awsome once i manage to fix this problem, im just hoping its not going to be a total disaster?!

cheers for any help you can give,
Griff

id remove rear prop shaft and try it ,after first jacking one rear wheel up with hand brake off and and see how it turns with a long bar and socket

hi again

only had the car a few days ,i knew it had a few probs thats why i got it cheap ,i love to spanner so dont mind having to play

im just hoping its not to many ££££££££s

ive seen the VCU thread and am hoping thats all it is as would be a easy fix but knowing my luck it will be worse lol

does this sound like a possible vcu problem?

if i disconnect the prop and see idf noise stops ,i assume that means it must be vcu or dif is this correct?

i have also noticed signs of oil around bottom of dif ,could that also be something to do with it ? maybe very low on oil?

also after reading a bit the noise /clunk could that be the dif front and side bushes?

as for laws over here im not to sure ,but im in the forces and still come under uk law

likely to be either VCU, IRD and or rear diff - could be abot £2K if you are unlucky.

Best to get yo money back.

read up on VCU test on here.

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

cant get my money back , but is that worse case?

labour i can do myself ,its just parts lol

right vcu test ,?

after reading little bits am i right in thinking the worse thing for it to be would be the irc unit?

also do any other landrovers have these vcu parts only asking as could prob get some from work if other landrovers ir defender ,90,wolf use the same things

as for the dif ,if its low on oil will that course total damage or just top up?

worse case if needed could i disconnect the prop and run it in 2wd or is that dangours ?

cheers for all your help
i only paid £600 for the car so i know i will need to spend some £s i just dont want to throw money at it if its not worth it if you see what i mean

look for the vcu test in the CFAQ section.

do not drive the vehicle
do the vcu test
report back
remove prop
most likely...

vcu
rear diff
ird
in that order.

thinking about it the guy did say the guitar on the prop had perissed ,would that course noise if crap got where that should be ?

gaiter i presume you mean cv near ird could be worn easy enough to check, you will have to check one bit at a time to prove cause ,start with rear wheel and seeing if cv or ird or diff flange have play ,then remove prop etc etc

if cv is seized it will put strain on system causing one or more failures either ird rear diff prop uj etc ,though even without a seized vc these can can happen anyhow ,cv is supported along with rear prop by 2 bearings ,these can fail too ,if vc is seized prop still needs removing even if you fix the failure as it will cause another ,only have a good vc fitted to vehicle

The grinding noise could be the vcu bearings....as said before remove the prop to confirm this.
As for the banging noise it could well be the rear diff bushes.....normally the nose one goes first and can cause it to bang under braking and acceleration.

thanks again

tomorrow i will try the vcu ,also the noise/clunk does only seem to happen on breaking /acceleration so hopefully changing all 3 bushes will solve that prob

fingers,toes etc crossed lol

right never got time today to play with car :-( wife said NO its boxing day lol

anyway all i got to do was take a few pics of things under the car ,to see if anything looked wrong/out of place

first the dif , this is what i mean by looks like may be leaking

what fluid goes into dif? how much? and if i take the front plate off it to look inside what sealant do i use to refit it ?

next i think from reading this is what you call the vcu and bearings

next i think is the iru

is there a gaiter missing from there???

i will def get out tomorrow

ep 75w/90 or 80w/90 or ep 90 any reasonable gear oil just check level and feel diff by rotating and checking lift in shafts and flange ,if you did remove cover just silicone it to refit, gaiters missing but there doesnt seem much evidence of loss of grease on floor above, so if its leaked out it was a while ago

right been out to car today and here is the results :-(

first the noise on back end that i thought may be the dif bushes

(click pic for vid)
YEP I THINK THAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM !

next the vcu test

so next to take it off :( ,hope its easy
all off and found this

any help ideas please ? could i be lucky and it just be that bearing (i dout it )

next took it apart and away till advise from you and i get some ££££

took it for a very quick test drive with out prop ,so 2wd and the horrible sound is totaly gone, so does that mean it must be either bearing or vcu ????

and last ,antill i get some £££ to fix the 4wd ,can i drive it in 2wd like this

or do i need to remove it and put a blanking plate in

cheers for everyones help in this
