so counld i be lucky and the grinding just be the bearing ? or has it prob broke the vcu as well?

now its off the car whats best way to test the vcu or will i need to put it back on to try it again

You can do a similar test on the vcu on a bench, to the one wheel up test. Slide the 2x props on the vcu. Clamp 1 prop stationary. Put a long screw driver through the uj on the other end of the vcu. Put a weight on the screw driver and watch it turn 45 degrees to horizontal. Time will be different to the one wheel up test on a Freelander. It's still a good indication.

id try 2 new support bearings ,diff bush or bushes and vc and gaiter for front of prop cv if cv is still ok ie no rotational play

not if it as fecked as that one - that might be the first "totally siezed" for Bell ;)

i assume the last comment on the thread means the vcu is totaly seized ? could it not of just been the bearing stopping it moving ???

i will try the bench test tomorrow ,if it is fu,,,ed where is the best place to get one ? is it worth getting a new one or recon one seeing the car is 11 yrs old now

Bell have just fitted a recon vcu and new bearings for £300. off the shelf £200 unfitted great service from austin and a nice cuppa to go with it!!!

Right antill the parts arrive i cant really do anymore to the drive train

But next lol (long list )

the clutch !!! is very very low to the floor ,done a bit of reading on here and saw the thread ,i assume its a pritty common fault on the freelander and just needs agood bleed /change of fluid

then its the windows two of them sound like they have come off there runners /cables hopefully they have not snapped

and if you look at below pic you can see the engine bay and there is a engine cover missing ,any ideas best place to get a second hand cover from ,as having the loom and injectors showing looks pooh

Jeez. You really bought a dog there, didn't you? Best to check the rear subframe attachments while you are under it. Search the CFAQ section for " Freelander" to find prospective faults & cures. Also look at the lists of faults in the Gaylander section.

I hope yu got deep pockets, coz this isn't going to be a cheap motor.

there are two versions of engine cover on td4 ,, full cover or small cover , the small cover is the one missing on yours the earlier versions had full cover , IIRC change over was in 2003 HTSH
