Are these JATE rings any good? It says they are forged but they look welded to me, and I've read elsewhere to avoid wleded ones and only go for cast/forged items - any thoughts?

PM632 Jate Rings (pr) Galvanised

EDIT: those above are just galvenised, these are the forged _ glavanised ones, but no picture! http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/OFF...ate_Rings_-_pair_-_Forged_and_Galvanised.html

Or would the ones at the bottom of this page be better (are quite a bit more expensive, though): Famous Four - Shackles JATE Rings and Lifting Eyes

Hi Landy1,

That's good to know! So did you tackle the red routes in your standard Disco, or stick to the white and red/white routes? I don't think underbody protection is going to be necessary, certainly not for the white and red/white routes! We are both going to fit recovery points (JATE rings I think) to the front, just because it is good practice as much as anything. Both got substantial towbars on the rear, which should be OK for a recovery - we're not heading for the black routes, after all!

I noticed the Herts4x4 club in your sig - where are you guys based? We could be interested in paying you guys a visit!! Do you go green laning as well as pay & play days?

P.S. Was this on a red/white route?! Lot of water over the bonnet there - is yours a TD5 rather than a V8 I take it?

hi mike

16 quid for a jate ring is about going rate, thats what i paid off britpart. attention, all forged jate rings seem to be identical, my guess is everyone buys them off someone.

i know you dont reckon underbody protection is necessary, i agree, i dont run anything but diff guards. please do heed my advice on these though, theyre the cheapest item, theyre the easiest to fit, and theyre also protecting the area thats most easy and most likely to be damaged.

cheers :)

Yes it is a TD5 Bog standard at the mo. I agree With Mr Noisy in regards to Diff Guards and underneath prtection. Got Diff guards to go on now,

This section is on the white route.
I did both whitw and 3 quarter of the red route. I did do one hill on the black route as I hadn't spotted the sign in time.

The club members are all over Herts, some in Peterbourgh, London,
we try to do green lanes once a month we have driving days,Trials camping weekends. The usual shows.Pub meets.

There is also do's that are not club events like before Christmas one guy was going to The Devils Pit he anouched it on the fourm and In the end I think there was about 6 of us turned up,
It is a brillent club non of this you have to have this or that on your motor, all very helpfull.
Pub meets are in Stevenage central to our club member spread if that's the right word..

Regards
Rob:cool::cool:

a bit 50/50 on the snorkel front there i know.

the water looks shallow enough, the initial splash probably wouldnt make it into the engine bay enough to cause a problem, but even so it was adventurous to try it at that pace :D

OK, thanks for the info Rob! So that puddle was on the white route?? Deeper than expected of a white route!! You fancy going again on the 13th Feb? That's when we're heading over!

Stevenage is a bit of a trek for me, but will keep an eye on the green laning dates and try and meet up for one of those perhaps! :)

That bit is on the outer circuit you come down a big hill Sharp right, I had to turn then back up slighty to get the right angle the other side of that bank is a silt area and is roped off. you are at the edge of that bit, throught it carry on and follow that track up the big hill to the car park.
Yes it was but as some one on here earlie suggested I had watched a couple of the other Discos go through first,

as water in the airbox ?? Did get a dribble into the air box, Looking at getting snorkel sometime. I'll check the date at work tomorrow but i think
I'm on call that weekend I will let you know.

This year hope fully gonna replace the bumper as i did crack and bent the fog light up a bit. seen a bumper I like and it's cheeper the the proper land rover bumper, Thinking about a steering guard Tank guard gonna check on that as my tow bar is a chunky one (did a lot of damage to a saxo that used me as his breaks at a round about) BTW the Picture in my avatar was after the water bit when I stopped for some grub

That's a good reason to keep the tow bar I reckon - protect you car from the idiots on the road, particularly during adverse weather!! :D

I guess a bit of water in the engine bay of a diesel isn't so bad - on my V8, it'd probably cut-out!! Oh well!

Where do you meet for green laning then? Would def be interested in joining you on the next one - Sun 6th Feb?

I personaly havent done a green lane yet, I always seem to be on call the weekends the do them but gonna try once i got a decent recovery rope for the front use a lifting strop on the back
Depends where they are going if its out towards Royston I think they meet at Baldock Services. Andy the green lanes officer emails what lanes they are doing and then meet at a determined placeif they in essex he might say Tescos near Dunmow at a particular time..
I'll pm you

I go off road every weekend and If you want my advice I'd say the first thing you want to do is have a walk around the car park and talk to some people. I still do even now at dinner time. Breaks are a time to socialise and making friends is the most important part of this game. You'll pick up on a lot by talking to people. See if you can tag along behind someone for a while.
Common sense goes a long way. You'd be surprised how many people don't have it and how many people I see doing stupid stings every time I go somewhere.

Frickley is open this sunday and it's my personal favourite place. Some woods to go through there as well. I should be going.

Another thing that you will be surprised at is how far you can get by going slowly. Approach an obstacle slowly and if you get stuck, reverse and go a bit faster. You won't get stuck unless you go in fast. Obviously on bigger things you'll have to go faster and only get one attempt but you'll soon learn how fast you need to go.

Where are you planning on going? If I've been, I will be able to tell you a bit about it.
