While in for mot, (usual stuff, holes in chassis, rear brake discs corroded, etc) now passed, I asked my indy for thoughts on rough running. Pulls well all gears, happy up to 70 or so, but still rough. Turns out the crankshaft damper has let go. Surprised for all my years on lz I have not heard of this but live and learn. Sourcing a new one, prices seem to vary from £100 to over £300 or so. Anyone had any experience of these?

hi,my freelander 1 td4 70k has just had same fault but mine was a light rattle only at ide and went above 10mph. seems theres a rubber seperator damper that collapses, got local garage to do a quick check this morn and its just started to split, in mon..new pulley ..get an original.. ebay crap only lasts 3k , so new pulley having new belts and tensioner..215 quid all in

I got mine from a Ford Transit parts place in Wembley, as the same pulley is used on Transits as well as the Td5, two year warranty for £100.

Thanks to all for your replies. Got a better idea of what I will have to spend! Crankshaft damper failure seems to be more common than I thought.

What symptoms are you getting? I'm having rough running (maybe fueling issues with mine)

Symptons were rough running over entire range when not in gear and the same when on road test. Still plenty acceleration right up to legal limit. At first I thought it was oil on harness, some oil at red plug but cleaned and difference. Changed out injector harness, again no difference. Indy checked with computer but no evidence of misfire. All down to the crankshaft damper letting go.

Doesn't sound the same as mine. Mine is as smooth as a car till 2500-2800 and then rough to max revs.
Might whip the fan off and get the belt off to see when I do the injector harness later.

hi lads..regards crank shaft damper seems most diesels have these and a typical sign is a light rattle on tick over , disappears about 2k revs..then it gets worse to the point the inner part that slides on crank separates from the outer with the belts on so no belt driving anything

Mine fitted on the engine right now is the original one, I bought a new one as I felt it was time to swap out all the pulley tensioners and belt as the truck has done 100k, I bought genuine LR pulleys as I cant see the point of messing around with these parts again.
I've had all the parts for months, but I really don't feel like pulling the radiator out and stripping it down right now, even got a new oil seal to fit behind the crank pulley, hoses and thermostat, not sure anything is really wrong but it has always made that little "churrp" noise when you switch it off.

my damper and aux belts all done, fully synthetic oil change, filter, coolant to -37...so ready for winter..all need now is snow
