So I have a whole new problem with my D2.

When pulling away or on slow corners we hear a clunking noise - which is difficult to locate but if pushed we'd say it came from the back of the car.

I can recreate this noise when parked by sitting in the driving seat and heaving myself forward and backward (ooer! nothing naughty;)).

The D2 is coil sprung (>3 years ago) and has no obvious problems in the drive chain or suspension - but I am no expert!

Anyone care to take a guess at the likely problem and immediate checks I can do?

td5 defender lt230te transfer box help

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hello can any one help me with a td5 defender lt230te transfer box.
i have just fitted a replacment transfer box and i have plug that should plug into a switch in the front output casing for the hi lo selector i think.
the old box i took out had a switch in it dont know what is is for. the land rover drives fine without it pluged in??? i did put a wire link across the two pins to see if a light comes on on the dash but nothing.
the old box has a switch in it . but the new replacment box has not even got a place for it to go. can any one tell what this switch is for please

many thanks darran sutton

Ok, I've found whats making the noise - can someone tell me what it is and how easy it is to go about fixing it?

clunk.JPG

The rod joint seems to move about 1-2mm and the back of the car wadldles when rocked - the clunk seems to be coming from that joint.

My disco used to have air suspension - will this cause a gotcha for identifying the parts?

Cheers

arb = anti-roll-bar?
I assume I take it off _and_ replace? :)

Microcat's pictures look nothing like it and it differentiates between cars with/without ACE - I believe I have ACE - does it keep ACE even if the suspension is no longer air?

Looking at RAVE it suggests renewing ACE filters and re-pressurising - is this needed - it seems a little overkill
Anyone done a nice write-up on this something with picture so even I can follow them?

Cheers

Thanks The Mad Hat Man.

These things plague me just before a long distance journey - 1500 round trip to France again(!!).

Do I _need_ to fix it before?

How big a job is it? Is it something for a DIYer like me or do I need to call in an expert?

All that ACE stuff seems a little scary - is that just RAVE being pedantic?

Are there different arbs for cars with/without ACE?

How do you know how bad my driving is :)

Are you guys really being serious?

But what am I taking off - there seems to be one joint making the noise.

Looking at the various diagrams for the ARB there's a lot to take off.
It seems a shame to lose the ACE too - assuming I still have it(!!)

From what I see the rod going across is the ACE enhanced actuator (judging by the right hand joint) but the part numbered RQK100000 looks nothing like it.

Its all very confusing (for me) at the moment

DONT TAKE IT OFF!

that is part of the rear panhard rod arrangement.

i just changed one of these busjes on a td5 at work, same thing, bit of a clunking, yet no mot fail :D

anyway, undo both arms from the top and bottom of the see-saw piece, then undo the see-saw piece form the axle, then replace the bush. they're about 25 quid :(

its nothing to do with your ACE or your ARB, its what holds your axle in the middle of the car.

and yes, we drove the one at work around for a few weeks with the bush knackered, no problem really, just noisy as hell.

get it changed :)

cheers, sam

Doh! I thought it all sounded a bit unlikely - too many smiley faces :)

That said neither my copy of microcat nor rave seem to think a TD5 disco2 should have a rear panhard rod - can you give me a part number or something else to try and find more about this problem?

Cheers Mr Noisy

well...

it may not be 'called' a panhard rod on microcat, because in effect there are two panhard rods on the rear axle.

however i can assure you i just changed a bush in one, and its the same symptom as yours (rocking the car from the roof rails make a clunking)

however, just consulting the files at work, i have a part number.

it was one of the end bushes i changed, the middle bush is different

#rgx100960

iirc it was a genuine part also.

hth, sam.

Brilliant! Thanks Sam - I'll take a look and try to buy the right bits tonight.
Hopefully RAVE and Microcat will play ball now :)

If you can think of any other gotchas I should prepare for I'm all ears but I'm feeling more confident now.

Do I need a big press to put the new bush in? This might make it a no-go for me :-(

Thanks

It certainly took some pressing to get it out!!

However, you can always try to beat it with some sockets and a large hammer, or a vice.

A press is the most controlled method though. You could always have an engineering firm swap the bushes and you do the rest.

Nothing tricky with this job, but iirc you'll need big spanners, I think I used 22,22,24.

Very tight and an adjustable wouldn't have cut it.

Good luck, sam

I'm a believer in polybushes - great thing is they're so easy to change!

And I can't see how cheap bushes can be that much worse than genuine polybush.

I mean, ok the fit might not be as good etc, but I bet the compound is very similar.

That said, even if you're looking at 100 quid for a full car set, it's nothing really.

And as above, once you've paid someone to remove all the metalastic bushes, you can fit the polys yourself and change them yourself in the future too, so it's a big saver really.

I have fully bushed my D1 and it's lovely!

Cheers, sam
