I believe the gearbox is a straight swap bar reverse switch wiring and if you have the different transfer box then it may need different handbrake assembly or original swapping over. I'm can't remember twas awhile ago that I did it to an old disco and it was fairly straight forward.

Ah it was on a hybrid disco/Defender I did it on and the handbrake was old fender hand brake cable so it may be even easier for Pikey. nowt that can't be sprted once he is running again. I'd be checking that clutch tho could be a quick £90 fix new clutch and go.

I take it he has he tried running it and listened for the input shaft spinning?

For a box to just go and lose drive is strange especially not able to get 4th and drive on that.

if you fit r380 instead of lt77 including 300 tdi t/box hand brake does need swapping over and holes for bracket drilled and tapped 8mm ,and speedo changing ,cable wont fit into drive of 300 one, loosing drive was a common fault when mainshaft splines went, rev light wires can jut be joined order of wires doesnt matter

They want to fit an LT77 instead of an R380. Nobodys knows owt what happened losing drive via output splines agreed but would have thought it would have been noticable and would have caused a horrendus noise or a bang at failure and I woulda thought Pikey would have the sense to take the pto cover off and look. I woulda thought that Pikey would of had a look by now and have told somone that its knackared. He would also hear the input shaft spinning that said nobody knows what he's done so its all speculation. I don't know Pikey at all but think by his posts that he would have done the above if suspected and sorted out exactly what he needs. the fact that he has us guessing makes me suspicios that he hasn't found a problem after checking the above so would lead to a clutch issue. Again all total guesswork because I don't know Pikey nor what he has already done or not done.

We're all in the dark!!! I guess he has it semi sorted and there is plenty of support of parts on here. Where abouts is he? I have to go to Slough on Monday first thing.

as you said hand brake assembly swap and still speedo, clutch plate center ,boxes are prone for rear mainshaft snapping on earlier boxes and input shaft (c/p)loosing all teeth through poor lubrication, both would be heard ,checking oil and gear selection without clutch can give clue on both boxes

If there's owt you need desperatly and I have it and can fit it in my car (its Pretty much full all the time) I can bring it down before on Monday. I do need to be in Slough at 9am tho

Right Apologies for the delay but It's a 2mile walk to civilisation & a pikeyable WIFI connection.. Even me wifi dongle don't work on the site. :(

Symptoms before disco died were a rattle that started at Wetherby North Yorks and got steadilly louder as I drove back on Tues. It finally died a death in Leicester in the form of a very bad vibration. which felt like the gearbox/transfer box was shredding internals.

Engine runs fine. Gears change smoothly but there is no output to props. Have tried LO HI and difflock on and off and Apart for the occasional Loud crunch In reverse Nothing?? Have removed Props today (No easy task on a steep slope  ) and turned Handbrake drum by hand all sounds smooth and both flanges turn.? However with engine running and in gear if I spin the Handbrake drum by hand I can hear the crunching noise again???? I will be removing PTO cover in the morning to see if anything is obvious But I'm leaning towards Clutch or Gearbox
