Hi all I have bought myself a second hand winch but upon inspection the free spool lever that should rotate through 180 degrees only turns 90 . I removed g/box and then cover plate to have alook there is a sleeve inside the g/box casing with 2 rings of teeth on the inner edge that I take should slide along inside the casing when the lever is turned to engage or disengage to gears. Now should this collar rotate inside the casing and how tight of a fit in the casing should it be any info appreciated .this is the winch in question Atlas 16,800 LB. it is a tight(ish) fit - not interferance but "snug", as for rotation dunno, but I picked up a seized winch with a bunch of other bits and after stripping out said collar cleaning and regreasing it now works a treat.

nope, just a good quality lithium bearing grease.

most important thing with winches - they like to be used, even if you dont use it in anger you really need to wind out a fair chunk of cable regularly, or you'll end up like i was - stuck on a hill with a buggered winch and egg on your face :)

good luck

Today finished rebuilding winch after cleaning and re greasing it all. The free spool lever now travels through 180 degrees smoothly. Fair leads fitted and now in process of bolting on winch .
