Hi all I have bought myself a second hand winch but upon inspection the free spool lever that should rotate through 180 degrees only turns 90 . I removed g/box and then cover plate to have alook there is a sleeve inside the g/box casing with 2 rings of teeth on the inner edge that I take should slide along inside the casing when the lever is turned to engage or disengage to gears. Now should this collar rotate inside the casing and how tight of a fit in the casing should it be any info appreciated .this is the winch in question Atlas 16,800 LB. it is a tight(ish) fit - not interferance but "snug", as for rotation dunno, but I picked up a seized winch with a bunch of other bits and after stripping out said collar cleaning and regreasing it now works a treat.

give it a good squirt with penetrating fluid aswell, mine was stuck when i got it but now works a treat.

nope, just a good quality lithium bearing grease.
most important thing with winches - they like to be used, even if you dont use it in anger you really need to wind out a fair chunk of cable regularly, or you'll end up like i was - stuck on a hill with a buggered winch and egg on your face
