Why fire when floored?!

Hello all.
I have 1995 manual 300tdi. It's got a cold starting issue. I.e when cold will struggle to turn over and may not start, requiring bump to get it going. Fine once hot.

Battery reads 12.6, when running 14.3
Glow plugs renewed last week.

My question is - What does the action of flooring the accelerator during cranking do?

The reason being today as the cranking was just about to subside (I.e a non start) I floored it and the engine caught and sprang into life with a roar and puff of smoke!

What is it getting that it doesn't without touching accelerator.

I realise there are many reasons why it isn't starting normally but I'm more interested on why it would this time.

my 300 tdi does the same... really struggles on cold mornings..

floor the pedal and huge cloud of white smoke when it fires up.. i'm hoping itd just un-burnt diesel..

Do you floor it before turning the key? Or just if it ain't gonna start?

if its cold i put pedal to the floor before i start it..

if i get it wrong and dont think its too cold i just floor it as its turning over..

turns over a bit slow when its cold and the battery is less than 12 mnths old..

It's not fly by wire. I read that they need to be floored when cold.
I thought I'd give it a go on mine, and bingo! Maybe it is extra fuel.

I thought there was an excess fuel device to help cold starting, but it only works if you DON'T floor the throttle. I may be wrong, but........
 
Tried to start my 300 tdi without touching the throttle in the frost the other morning and it wouldn't fire.
Floored the throttle and she started instantly.

All the diesels I have ever owned started better with foot hard down because this introduces the maximum amount of fuel into the cylinders.

If my 300 and previous 200s had a cold start device then it never worked:)

Ever damn diesel I have ever drive in the last 40 years rather it was either start or new style glow plugs had to do the same. just the nature of the beast. You remember the old either gell caps in the 60's :D
