Which Oil for TD5

Am I correct in thinking I need 5w 30 semi synthetic oil for my Disco TD5?
Asda have this for £16 for 5L

ASDA 5W30 Semi Synthetic Oil - 5L | Motor Oil | ASDA direct

Will this oil be good enough?

Stu

Hi Stu, this oil would just about do for a TD5 but it's not really good enough. It's an A1/B1 oil which is quite old and relatively low spec.

If you want to optimise the working of your engine mind advice would be to look out for an A5/B5 oil as this not only protects the engine very well but helps with mpg too.

I would be concerned about brands, I use Carrefours' own brand but fully synth 5-30 in my previous TD5's and they ran really well on it.

Good luck and don't forget to change the rotor filter,

Dave

5w30 is a winter grade you need 10w30 or 10w40 for summer I us 10w40 for summer helps carry away heat better than the thin stuff

Make sure it has a diesel rating with turbo as oil for a petrol is not the same rating

Not quite as simple as that:5w-30 is for ambient temps between -30° & +35°C.

So perfect for a British summer :D:D:D:D:D

Using a 5 grade oil has the advantage of getting into all the little knooks and crannies quicker on start-up.

our temps go from -40c to +40c during the year. then you think how hot the road surfaces get..... they get in the +50-60c you are driving over heat rises at least here:D

Both these multigrade oils are SAE 30 grade, although one is 5w the other 10w and therefore both are multipurpose and suitable for low winter temps with the 5w being lower.

The winter temps in my part of the world make 10w more than suitable.

All the info U need to know is in this link. Car Bibles : The Engine Oil Bible

Thanks for all the replies, I thought the £16 Asda stuff was probably too good to be true for the Disco.
What are the benefits of fully over semi synthetic? I thought the semi synthetic was what was required for a TD5?

not a great deal ,semi is ok as would ordinary mineral oil be fine if to changed regulary ,10w40 is also fine ,regular changes are more important that extra dear oil

I've had a good look at the engine oil spec link above but am still not sure what oil I should use. I was going to buy a semi synthetic 5w30 oil and I think I still will but should I buy the cheapest and change more frequently or spend a bit more and leave it for the full service interval?

just buy fleet oil from local motor factors ,regular changes are better with whatever oil you choose ,car manufacturers like long service interval for commercial reasons not your cars longevity

how often you change miles and months?

Taken from the Discovery 2 workshop manual

Engine oil - Td5
Use 5W/30, 5W/40, 5W/50, 10W/30, 10W/40, 10W/
50 or 10W/60 oil to specifications ACEA A1/B1,
having a viscosity band suitable for the temperature
range of your locality.

This is suggesting A1/B1 oil to promote fuel efficiency and makes no mention of synthetic / semi synthetic.
