Hi chaps.

So I’ve picked up a refurbished PTU and want to get this bolted in place today, what I’m not 100% sure on is which oil to use? I know it’s 75w90 fully synthetic, everything that is being thrown up is either manual or gl5 but semi synthetic? I don’t want to put some cheap oil in there after going through the expense of replacing the transfer box, but at the same time I’d ideally like something I can go and buy off the shelf today!

Same question goes for the gearbox oil!

On a side nore* How much oil goes into both? With the PTU off the car I was hoping to fill with oil then fit, I can sit it on a level surface and go through the fill procedure off the car!

Cheers

If it's a manual box, then it takes Castol BOT350 m3 oil. This is specifically formulated for this gearbox. It's a 75w grade oil, but it's silly expensive. I used 75w90 GL5 synthetic in mine, which doesn't seem to have caused any issues yet.
The PTU takes Castol BOT118+. This is also a specifically designed formulation for the PTU. I used a fully synthetic 75w90 in mine, which again doesn't seem to have damaged it so far.

It’s actually an Auto.

I don’t suppose you have a link to somewhere I can buy the oil?

Much appreciated!

Are the oils different for an Auto PTU to a manual PTU ? knowing land rover most likely, but have not seen it wrote up anywhere so would be good to know for sure.

No the oils are the same, although the actual PTU is different between the various drive configurations.

maybe have a read of this link below

Hi Steve.
How is it going with your FL2 now any updates for us :vb-tup:
Yes.

Refurb PTU has been in for a few months and seems fine.

When I swapped out the old PTU I decided to replace both front drive shafts for new parts, sadly I have an issue with the driver side CV joint nearest the wheel hub! It makes a click noise while driving. At first it was only noticeable at low speed and when the auto engine was downshifting, it also made the noise when sat stationary and going from Drive to Reverse! So I’m actually about to order a new shaft and replace this so I can send the other back to the manufacturer. Seems odd that a new part would do this, but nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to Land Rovers….

Was the drive shaft an OE part? I've hear of aftermarket shafts failing quickly, but OE and LR boxed generally last well

Aftermarket but from a reputable supplier (not EBay). It was clicking from day one so I suspect little or no grease inside the boot? Can’t be certain… I spoke to the supplier and at first they tried to dismiss it, then I sent them a video showing it slipping when shifting from reverse to drive. They wanted me to send it to them so they could send to the manufacturer for inspection, but in the meantime that would leave me with no car for however many weeks! So I’ve decided to buy a replacement from somewhere else, just waiting on that turning up so I can swap it over! I’m hoping it’s just the driver side and the passenger side isn’t also a ticking timebomb!

Hi Steve.
Hopefully the ebay seller of the damaged will refund you for the shaft that is clicking, good luck.
