Walkie talkies or cb's?

In-car "Handsfree" Law
This law DOES NOT apply to CB Radio or PMR446 Walkie Talkies - only to using your mobile phone while driving.
This is because CB and PMR are "simplex", i.e. you take turns talking and listening - and this is not considered to be as much of a distraction.

Having said this, some of the manufacturers are looking at various handsfree options, as the mobile phone law has brought the subject of distractions and safety in general to peoples' attention.

yup i heard that it was illegal. i try not to make it too obvious if im using it while driving but thats not always possible. nowadays i tend to only use cb if parked up or if say me and heffalump are driving

we hardly use ours at all on road i think once or twice and i think its as much of a distraction as a mobile phone as u have to push to talk where as a mobile u just listen and talk

we use ours on trips out, but usually theres the family in 2 discos, so theres always a passenger to use it. i talk to my dad if we finish at the same time on the way home sometimes, if i remember! but never been caught yet :D

Hmmmm call me old fashioned but.... Surely spotting using hand signals is less likely to misinterpretation than a radio. I mean "Don't go" and "Go" may sound similar, but a hand signal won't be misunderstood we hope.

For comms... the obvious advantage of a cb is the range. If one person has to go find help, then he will be in contact with the convoy for longer... maybe this could make a difference in a medical rather than a simple recovery situation?

CB is legal to use while driving. This is due to the complications of allowing other organisations to use 2 way comms while driving (police, ambulance, army etc.) We used to use it all the time in the 70s and early 80s. no one ever got nicked and as afar as I am aware no one has ever been nicked since.

Thats why we dont say go or dont go :D "stop" or "wait" are better, also "come on" or "MMOOOOVVVEEE" are better.

i see what you mean by range, but you should never be without your mobile, and CB does depend on cover/atmosphere abit.

:D that and a portable CB are so HUGE you could use that as a ground anchor :D

CB gets my vote.

Have always found it works well when laning and has enough range that if you get into trouble and there's no signal for your mobile you at least stand some sort of chance of screaming for help. As with all forms of radio there are limitations but I think CB with a mobile phone has the least uncertainty.

CB's are good but. Vhf/Uhf amateur radio is sooooooooooo much better For 1 you don't get numpties swearing or playing house music with the mic keyed open for 2 hours. And with the use of repeater stations a range of 100 miles is easily acheivable. even on a 5W handheld (pmr walkie talkies are limited to .5W) You don't need line of sight with a vhf radio

Just buy one on ebay. I got both my 2m rigs, 1mobile 1handheld for less than £80. If you build your own your only allowed to use a comercially available kit anyway. So you might as well just buy a good ready made one.

Well thats a bit crap. fair enough, the old man's got a dead nice yaesu 2m handheld I might try to find an old one of them, actually i bet him and my geeky uncle have got loads of old kit going spare, I'll ask them.

I got an Ahlinco tough talker handheld for £27 and an Albrecht AE550 for £43 both 2M, off ebay. The Albrecht does 25watts on full power. Of course been only a foundation licence holder with a 10Watt limit I wouldn't dream of using it on Full power!!!!!! :D :D

Whats all this 'foundation course' stuff.

Am lookin to fit a CB in me new disco, is this somethin I should have/get/do????

No yer dunt need a licence for CB any numpty can have one. we're talking about Amateur Radio or ham radio as it's sometimes called. A CB is limit to 27MHZ and 4Watts a radio Ham can use huge sections of the whole bandwidth. and upto 100Watts. But you need a licence to use ham radio.
