my father seems to think the IRD has failed on his 99 diesel 5-door,
there is a big clank/bang fron g/b area when driving slowly (backward or forward). he feels this may be due to the VCU being seized...
the question is how much (roughly) will he be looking at to have these replaced/renewed by a local garage...... any ideas??

Not sure that tells him how much - could be as little as £300 notes up to about 2 grand if you get Ashcrofts to supply and fit - that is with a courtesy car tho.

Recon VCu start at around £250. Make sure you get the damper with it though as some places just send out the VCU unit. You can use the old one off your old unit but you might aswell get a new one if your replacing it.

About £30 upwards for a set of VCU bearings.

Recon Ird's start around £450. personally, if i had the cash i would buy a new one Or rebuild your old one yourself if you have the savy and equipment.

If your IRd is really knackard then you can bet your life the rear diff has taken a beating too. I got a 2nd hand diff knocking about if you want it £50 collected.

To fit all your new parts (depending on model year) is going to take a garage a couple of days max to do. Work out the hourly rate!

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Mark

Reconditioned VCU £200 on exchange of your old unit, reconditioned ird £400 on exchange basis or have your current box rebuilt from £300

Any advice just ask
