Morning All,

I wonder if I can get some thoughts/advice on gearbox/ird leak. Mine is a 2006 TD4 freelander 1.

Got under to replace the offside suspension arm yesterday and noticed oil stains on the underbelly tray as well as a drip of oil hanging off the area where the Gearbox and IRD join. Looking at the location, the darker colour and thickness of the oil and that it took around 300ml to top up the gearbox I am sure this is gearbox oil - and that the leak is from the Gearbox/IRD joint ( I cant check the IRD level at the moment since the filler plug is seized in - again)

I have been looking at diagrams and photos to try and understand how the two boxes fit together in order to understand what I am looking at - with limited success.

Couple of photos attached of the IRD/gearbox joint - if I have interpreted them correctly the "tube" with the oil on it is part of the IRD and contains the shaft which fits into the gearbox output and also that all the seals are part of the IRD rather than the gearbox and therefore it is the (relatively simple to remove) IRD that needs to come out.

Looking at diagrams I see there are 2 seals and an O ring on the part that bolts to the gearbox. One seal keeps the IRD oil in, another stops the gearbox oil reaching the IRD and the O ring seems to form a gasket between the IRD and gearbox housing.

I have had a look around the forums but cant find any discussions re the IRD/Gearbox seal replacement ( but am happy to be proved wrong!)

Q1) Have I the correct understanding re the above?
Q2) Is it likely that its simply the O ring that has failed or is the correct thing to do replace the O ring and the IRD seal closest to the gearbox. I keep reading that the 2 seals are in the "tube" containing the IRD shaft but I havent found anything about how or how easy these are to get at and replace - comments?
Q3) As it seems a relatively simple job (compared with taking the gearbox out) I am torn between doing it myself and, as the garage costs should be "relatively" low, getting it into the local independant landrover garage. I am reasonably mechanical and have access to a good selection of tools as well as some high axle stands (eg I replaced the rear diff without any issues ). I am wondering how easy this is to do on the driveway and ,as I will be working alone, in particular how people lower and raise the IRD for removal/fitting single handidly. Looking to balance my time and effort versus just letting the garage do it if the cost is reasonable.

The slave cylinder and clutch were replaced by the garage around 18 months ago so I dont expect any issues of stuck bolts due to the factory fitted "loktite".

Q4) are there any other issues or things I need to be aware of.

I guess what I am looking for is a concensus that its simple to do on the drive and that the cause will almost certainly just be the O ring (Part TYX100490)

Many thanks for any thoughts.
