Tyre pressures help...

Hi all, I recently stopped messing around with inferior motors, sold my 06 Megane estate put some dosh towards other things (wedding..ggrrr) and then as a compromise with her indoors, I went out and brought myself a 96 Discovery 300tdi. I looked past the fact it was filthy inside and out and has a few minor scabs in the usuall places. For a very reasonable £850 quid and many minor purchaces on ebay, I have a straight and now very tidy disco, please see the attachment, I think I have done well. It came with the ES freestyle wheels in a gunmetal grey (unmarked) and a brand new set of 245 70r 16. My problem is it does not mention this size in either the owners manual or the haynes manual when it comes to the tyre pressures. Tried a few sites but I still have no idea what pressures to set them at. Steering is as precise as they get, steering box is dry with no noises all lubed up correctly but steering seems unusually heavy and the tyres do look a low front and back. Any help you guys can give would be appreciated.

Many thanks for the info, been in transport for toooo many years and your never to old to learn something new. Thanks again for your quick response. Now I just get the manual out again and check the pressures, easy when you have the right answers. cheers.

hi mate i work on landrover/ discoverys and other motors and we always put 28psi in the front and 36 in the rear thats what i have alway run mine on but just check your power steering fluid just in chase its low:welcome2:

You've done very well there mate - that's a very smart Disco you've got.

Re tyres pressures I always run mine at 33psi front and 36psi rear - unless I'm towing or loaded up in which case I increase the rear to 40psi.

before you go inflating the rears check what the max pressure is its moulded on the side of the tyre .... says somethin like max load x lb at y psi......
 
Many thanks all for your responses. I think the Max pressure written on the sidewall is 45psi. I will check the pressures again tomorrow and inflate or deflate as needed and see how that feels. Going to try 33 front 36 rear unless anybody thinks that's not wise. Again thanks all.

Just make sure your pressure gauge gives a correct reading, I have two digital gauges plus one on an electric pump they all read different by 2 or 4psi each way.
So I still use an old Dunlop stick gauge which I believe is accurate.
 
Thanks to thebiglad, Mrs is not too happy I've had my hands dirty every weekend so far. but thanks again, it didn't look like that when I picked it up. Elbow grease and TLC, and once I am happy it's all working as it should be then it's time to get it dirty..lol.

I have a digital gauge and I did have a dunlop stick gauge but I just can't find it. I will take the digital one to the garage and compare. cheers.
 
Thanks for all your help and info. I have the faint glimmer of little/major problem but I think I will start a new thread as it is not related to tyres. please look out for it.
 
Hello, i have a 95 m reg with 255 all round and with my calculations from haynes and also disco books i put my front wheels on 26 and my rear on 32... i do this when tyres are cold, because they reckon when they are warm the reading in psi can increase by 2-3 psi. I have no problems what so ever with these pressures and she runs very smooth and light on stearing... Good luck and well done ya disco looks very nice.

I accept entirely that you are happy but I would not be so - the disco weighs roughly 2200kgs depending on spec - so tyre pressures that low are likely, imo, to lead to wear on the shoulders and a lack of overall steering and handling precision.

It is not to do with Weights of vehicle, as I know from experience of working with some very lage Vehicles. I.e. A Farm Tractor has Massive wheels and a large amount of weight, but alas the pressure are as low as 18-20 psi.. It is to do with recommendations and Overall Tyre safety on the road, if manufactors recommend 26 in front and 34 in rear then surely that is within all possible road safety limits.

P.s. I firstly thought that they were a low pressure, but under testing conditions of high and low speed, my car stops very well and in a straight line with no pulling and the power stearing is spot on..
