hi everybody, got a bit of a problem, wi my 98 p38 4.0 (auto) when i reverse out the drive or parking bay, ive got to rev the **** out it to get it moving, going forward is ok, it selects an goes thru the gears ok, the oil level is ok, any suggestions

hi, i checked the oil thats on the dipstick, its clear and fresh looking, if it is the clutch pack whats involved in replacing it. cheers
Drain some out the box and check - the thin layer on the dippy won't show much....

Changing a clutch pack - hugely involved, I am no Auto Box expert, but pretty sure it consits of drop box, take it apart, remove the knacked clutch pack (there is one per gear plus reverse) put it all back together and put back on vehicle then hope for the best....

The Clutch packs are buried within the box.....

When you engage either forward or reverse, the main clutch for each of those functions is mechanically selected. Forwards clutch #4, reverse clutch #5. Other clutches are then selected electronically depending on which position the gear stick is in 1 2 3 D or R. In reverse besides the main clutch #5 two others are selected electronically. So you may have a fault on the XYZ switch. Diagnostics may tell you.

it does mean removal of box from vehicle, and clutches dont operate on their own you have several combinations for different gears ,clutches 4 and 5 as in manual or A and B as was previously known can be changed just by removing bell housing so simple, the others are a lot more involved and mean removal of valve block ,diagnoses involves whether other funcions/gears operate as well too
