hi, ive took on a project with this discovery 300tdi, it had alot of rust issues but i new this and took it on anyway as it was 500 pound, and had a full engine rebuild with new gearbox, clutch, transfer box 30,000 miles ago, brand new lift kit, poly bushed ect, so a good base when rust is gone, the rear inner arches are goin and sills, but thats ok i no there fairly easy to do,also abit of chassis welding is needed and ive had some done already but again thats not my worry as fairly easy, but i wont off roading and lost my bumper top cover and it showed me how much rust there really is and its worried me now as looks a BIG JOB, and seems that the bodys dropping as my doors badly catching on opening and its f**cked my bottom of my door 2 now, so its time for this work now :( (need my back door), question is can it be done is it to bad ?? please help any opinions welcome im posting a few pics, and im in essex does anybody no of any good 4x4 welders to do the job as people are saying you can get it done for around 350 supplyed and fitted which is fair i think so im prepared to do it, !!!!! should i get a crossmember with extensions, do they have to cut it away from the body and reweld it ??

Mate anything with a Disco is possible. Have a look at my thread Discovery Sills and Boot etc and you will see what people have done. I wouldnt be detered now facing a new crossmember etc YET before I started I was very nervous.

It is easier than you think if you tackle a bit at a time. See me for encouragement

just carried out this repair over the weekend. It is a challange, but as Greenhornet says if you take it a bit at a time it is easily do-able!!! Just remember and support the bosy once you cut off the rusty remains of the crossmember or you will have difficulty when it comes to fitting the new one (don't ask how i know that)!!!

Weld a brace across the rear door aperture to keep the spacing correct, also put the chassis on bricks, and then send a long piece of 6x2 through the rear side window aperture and support on acro struts or similar. This keeps the relation between body and chassis correct.

Cut out, bosh the new one in, bolt the mounts to the chassis, and then WELD LIKE **** for a while :D

Firstly I may be wrong but of the body is dropping at the rear the back door will not be touching at the bottom unless of course the bottom door mount has weakened and the door itself is dropping.

Both my rear body mounts had completely gone and were not supporting the body at all yet my door was still not catching.

In terms of cost, a new crossmember with mounts from YRM Metal - Descent Panels made well - is about £128 and can be delivered next day if you call them. I reckon if you spend a weekend doing it a) you will know that its done right and B) you will save yourself money.

At the end of day like, its what ever you feel comfortable doing.
