I am currently sitting waiting for the AA, my rear bearing has collapsed (300 disco axle). I have removed the flange bolts but the shaft is stuck, I can get it about an inch out but no more than that. Is there a common reason for this? It was hit but wheel was still turning, just very rough and not well...

I have ended up burning the half shaft off, it seems the inner race has shrunk onto the stub axle, fortunatly I have a spare axle outback although its 10 spline, the stub axle will be good, hopefully can get a new half shaft today so can get back on road asap... getting right fed up of landrovers and I use to think old VW's were bad!!

the bearing has probably been collapsed for a while and the race has basically welded itself to the stub, its usually just the case of persistance to knock the half shaft out then get a mini grinder and cut the race off

Looking at it that seems to be the case, the race was totally welded to the hub, couldnt even chisle small bits off, it was like 1 piece of metal so have ground bak and made it as good as possible, its not perfect but theres no play with the new bearing race fitted and its sits flush, I dont like it but it will get me out a hole. The half shaft still wont fit through (I cut the end of the old one) but I will just fit the new half shaft first and then the hub, I hope to have it swapped out for a new stub next week so it only has to make do for a few days...

you will have a lot of problems going through muddy water unless cleaned out asap ,twisting the end of splines that go into diff is common cause ,but since yours moved and inch could be bent

just a bit of advice if it ever happens again dont try and chisel the race of in bits, its made of hardened steel and will kill any chisels, ive done it before and bits of the chisel have broke off, and lesson learnt now as a piece broke off and ended up in my eye so be careful mate

Well serviced i.e Bearings greased up, and free from ****e in wunt have happened !

It is well serviced, I always grease bearings, joints e.t.c but it's an off roader and used as such so always gets an ingress of crap. I knew it was a bit rough and it was due to be changed, it didn't seem that bad the other day but I was going by the outer bearing which was still fine.... Lesson learned, just swap thm out if at all suspicious....

It's always that bastid inner bearing

My 110 is my toy, works vehicle and takes me and family to Morocco ever year. The thought of one of the rear wheels locking up due to bearing failure on some of them motorways in the Spanish mountains always inspires me to strip each corner and check them over.

this is what happend to mine when wheel bearing collapsed and bear in mind in the pic both hub nuts are still on the stub axle just very round now

who the fcuk takes there bearings apart for regular maintenance after initial install, and nobody is gonna take it all apart to clean them out on a regular basis..

on offroad vehicles things fail quicker than your shopping motor u just gotta replace things more often, especially with bigger tyres and lift kits and actually using landrovers for what they are supposed to be used for

I do inspect mine, well, I stick it on my ramp at work every few months and check for play, dont ever strip them down though. This has ****ed me off as I knew it was a bit rough the day before but decided to fix that next week... I even had a bearing in the back ready to be fitted on!! Oh well, £20 for a stub aint bad...

was out in mine and we kept hearing the noise like a stone stuck in the disc guard we checked everything and even jacked up each wheel and checked for play in the bearings and everything seemed ok

later that day it collapsed:mad:

Local garage nipped up my rear bearing for MOT (two weeks ago).
Wasn't happy with the noise from the back so i decided to replace it tonight.

Seems the inner race has become one with the stub axle
Ordered all the parts from the same 4x4 specialist who provided one seal. Didnt think anything of it as the Disco only had one seal (on the inner bearing).

But the 110 (1989 CSW with Salisbury axle) had a seal on both bearings?
Is this normal, if so I'll have to try and get one tomorrow morning.

Anyway suggestions for getting the race off (limited tools and knowledge).
Thinking about grinding a grove in it (Dremel) and then hammering it round to try and get some movement. Any other ideas?

yes grind it then split it with a chisel , they do have 2 seals to keep oil out of wheel bearings but with the benefit of allowing oil to drive member splines unlike 300tdi onwards the outer seal is frc8222 which has its own washer it runs on
