OK.. MOT due.. this thread's more for me than you but it might be useful to someone and I know there's knowledge out there that can help me out....

The MOT is due 13th Jan....

Need:

  • ABS - reset fault codes and identify / fix cause
  • Front fog lights... remove and cut off front valance (anyone know if I need to take the switch out as well)
  • Wash the engine bay and find the leak.. think it's PAS fluid and some days the puddle is enough the tester might have an issue with it....
  • Exhaust - bandage up the manifold joint so he can't see the missing studs... - risky but no way can I afford to replace it right now...
  • steering lock stop - adjust so the tyres stop rubbing on left lock..
  • Engine bay - get rid of the mud...
  • Body - get rid of the mud... spray some hammerite on the arches so it looks good... check the boot floor... hammerite if needed
That ought to keep me going for now... any suggestions of anything else I should be checking / expecting to fix... it's a '98 V8 ES

ABS - reset fault codes and identify / fix cause

Cover/remove warning lamp!

Front fog lights... remove and cut off front valance (anyone know if I need to take the switch out as well)

Front fog lights are not testable, leave em be!!!

Wash the engine bay and find the leak.. think it's PAS fluid and some days the puddle is enough the tester might have an issue with it....

Clean up just before going!, make it look good...

Exhaust - bandage up the manifold joint so he can't see the missing studs... - risky but no way can I afford to replace it right now...

As long as it is securely attached and not blowing, it'll be ok - tester cannot remove coverings

steering lock stop - adjust so the tyres stop rubbing on left lock..

Do it!

Engine bay - get rid of the mud...Body - get rid of the mud... spray some hammerite on the arches so it looks good... check the boot floor... hammerite if needed

He'll soon tell you!

Sometimes I think rather than spending ages going over a vehicle, check the lights and stick it in. Find somewhere that gives a free retest and a weeks grace.

Don't go faking all these things up, cos you never get back to doing them once you get that little bit of paper, and the shelved repairs become terminal.

TBH the only faking I was planning to do was the exhaust cos I don't want to spend what little money I have now on replacig the studs only to have to replace them again when I fit the stainless steel straight through I'm saving up for... plus if the car fails on something that's gonna cost a lot (or if I need new expensive parts to sort the ABS out in which case I wont bother getting the test this time) I've got another car that I can use but it needs tax.. so the plan is to get it through cheap and then start spending money on it or let it fail and tax the other motor.. then start spending money on it...

the front fogs - there's one missing... I understood that if you had them on the car they had to work so was gonna remove the other one.. while I'm at it might as well take the valence off and once that's off the corner thingies need a cut.. but I'm gonna start with the ABS.. wish me luck...

and Ratty.. It's a '98

well ABS has me totally lost now... I took out the trusty paperclip and read through the fault codes... 2-14 and 6-14 related to the time the abs kicked in at 60mph after a bit of laning so I put that down to mud / grit in the wheels... so clear the other faults and road test see if it comes back before messing... then I got 4-14... and 4-14 comes back every time I start the engine... so clear the code, replace the relay, key in light comes on, blinks once stays on, turn the engine on and get over 5mph.. light stays on... went through that cycle about a dozen times and the same...

web searching gives me only one clue to the possible meaning of the code which is here:

Wabco Vario C version ECU Blink Code List

which says Short circuit to positive contact 7 Retarder (ECU 446 105 051 0 only) - which I don't even know is the right model of ECU as I don't fancy taking the dash out (airbags eww)

I've cleaned and dried all the connections into the modulator unit and still the same.. out of light now so any ideas people before I tax the other motor and leave this one till I have more cash?

I have had a look through my diagnostic and it doesn't do ABS on your year of disco.

I can try plugging it in and telling the diagnostic it is a 2000 model which it will cover ABS on and see if it will pull up any specific codes or areas to look at if that is any help? No guarantees it'll work though.

well I have no idea.. right now I'm thinking it'll have to wait till next weekend and that's cutting it fine for the MOT.. I might just tax the other car and leave it till next month but first I'll strip down the front wheel that showed the air gap fault and see if there's a dodgy connection there that might be causing a short...
