well I had another look at the ABS... the 4-14 fault is persistent and reading around is def electrical... as it occurred (I think) at the same time as the air gap on the front wheel I wonder if that is where the short is... I've taken the wheel off and I can see the wire going in the top but I can't see how to get the sensor out.. all the other posts about it seem to make out it's simple so I'm probably being thick but can anyone give me a pointer in the right direction please???

PS... I think I'm gonna tax the other motor and give me some time to sort this out... there's no point putting it in the MOT if it's gonna cost me a fortune to get this sorted and would rather do it myself anyway...

FAILED

£959 ......

Brakes - can't remember which way round he said but one was a pad and one was a disk ...

ABS - veridct is needs a new front left sensor apparently....

PAS pump leaking (how is that a fail anyone)

so... back home with it and start researching see if I can do it myself within this months £400 budget and get it back in for a retest... otherwise I'm discoless for at least another month..

:frusty: :frusty: :frusty: :frusty: :frusty:

I'll get the paperwork and post how it breaks down laters... I think the speed sensor and the brakes are easy to fix, the PAS pump I am guessing he has quoted for a new one but I presume it will be leaky seals and they can be fixed??? still not sure how a leaking pas pump is an MOT fail though....

well I went and picked her up....

Failed on:

Offside front headlamp aim too low
Nearside inner rear brake disc excessively pitted
Offside inner rear brake disc excessively pitted
Nearside outer rear brake pads insecure
(steering box) Power steering components leaking from a failed seal

advisories:

(front) Brake pad(s) wearing thin
power steering fluid level low**Dangerous**

and of course the ABS light on which they did diagnostics for me:

Fault Code Screen
Front Left Airgap too wide
Front left wheel sensor open circuit
Front left wheel sensor airgap too large

And on a road test got 0mph reading from the front left wheel sensor...

So the quote:

NSF ABS Sensor £201.00
Rear discs £78.00
Rear pads £28.00
PAS Box £237.93
Fluid £5.00
Brake cleaner £3.00
PAS fluid £10.00
LABOUR £216
all inc VAT...

so the questions for the experts then:

PAS box - are the seals easy enough to change or should I go for a new box and if a new box are there recon units out there for reasonable prices that are good enough

is the ABS sensor likely to need replacing or is there a wire come off it or sommat - I remember reading they were solid state and unlikely to fail in themselves

is the labor rate reasonable enough or should I do it myself (bearing in mind I have 10 days to do it which really means this weekend only)

 - wots meant by....
"Nearside inner rear brake disc excessively pitted
Offside inner rear brake disc excessively pitted"
inner discs? - are you saying you have twin discs on each wheel? or is this a way of saying the inner surface?

vented discs that look like a pair ?

I think he knows very little about vehicles, good job it's getting tested again afterwards, however I think if he gets into fitting discs then he has got to be careful.

Power steering ****ing oil all over the place aint good, just like the rack leaking or a box or burst gaiters on the rack and so on gota fix it.

Used to be that you could take the belts off then it wernt power steering then the pump had to come off, but fook knows now. Lets face it it aint much good without it so fokin fix it Roy, chink chink!!

thanks David.. that's a really useful post.... I know if it's leaking it needs fixing... I don't know how it's an MOT fail... nor do you obviously or you would have said....

Mad Hat Man... I just copied what it said on the fail sheet... I'm guessing he means the inner surface cos the outer surface looks fine... TBH I'm surprised they need replacing so soon but not upset by it... I use me brakes a lot :D

Have done some searching and quite like the Paddocks prices... no idea if I will like the parts though eh...

Rear pad axle set (disc, pads and fixers) £20.90
ABS sensor £110 (but I had to call for that and she seemed to think there was only one on the rear so not utterly convinced she had the right part in front of her)

anyway.. at those prices total cost if I paid for the labor would be £454.26 so might just do that... lazy sod me innit
PAS box recon units form £89.36 - £109.79 (but you have to pay another £100 until they get the old one back)

labor? Labour please - yu int a merkin. :D

If you use your brakes a lot - consider EBC greenstuff 6000 pads - possibly even their disks - bloody good and designed for heavy use, low dust and less brake fade (useful when coming down a long embankment).

I have had a look through my diagnostic and it doesn't do ABS on your year of disco.

I can try plugging it in and telling the diagnostic it is a 2000 model which it will cover ABS on and see if it will pull up any specific codes or areas to look at if that is any help? No guarantees it'll work though.

Will not work - Tried it with my Dads Scanner at work.

considered them, then when I got off the floor where I fell when I saw the price I decided to get the ****part ones for the MOT and think about upgrades later :D
