I bought one from Maplins for around 30 quid to fix the remote locking on my old van. Would need an LED somewhere so i can see if its actually turned it on though.

Going back to security devices, can you sill get the old fashioned crook lock? The one where the hook went under the clutch pedal and the other end onto the steering wheel? Been searching everywhere and all I can find is offensive weapons thinly disguised as poxy steering wheel bars.

Doubt it, they were pretty easy to get round

Crook Lock is a good deterrent but as a security device never, not since when the deformable steering wheels were introduced in IIRC the late 60s when it then became obsolete, even the modern version 'Stop Lock' that clamps around the rim has a lock that can be ''picked'' with a tool that's available for locksmith trade.

It's illegal to leave an unattended vehicle with the engine running, anywhere private or public

some **** of a mercedes owner was done for it. After gobbing off to the plod who asked him not to do it.

the environment act 2002 makes it an offence to leave an engine running when stationary. regardless of where it's parked.
and the road traffic act allows the issue of a Fixed penalty notice £20 IIRC..

C&U regs
Stopping of engine when stationary98.—(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), the driver of a vehicle shall, when the vehicle is stationary, stop the action of any machinery attached to or forming part of the vehicle so far as may be necessary for the prevention of noise.
(2) The provisions of paragraph (1) do not apply—
(a)when the vehicle is stationary owing to the necessities of traffic;
(b)so as to prevent the examination or working of the machinery where the examination is necessitated by any failure or derangement of the machinery or where the machinery is required to be worked for a purpose other than driving the vehicle; or
(c)in respect of a vehicle propelled by gas produced in plant carried on the vehicle, to such plant.

As there is no such thing as term "environment act 2002" so it make it hard to put the cut & past information in to context ie. stationary98.—(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), .....they mean?....

Here we go... the last paragraph at the bottom of the page suggests that it may be exceptable to leave the engine idling to defrost or to cool down the vehicle, there's no mention that I can see saying that the vehicle must not be unattened.
For those interested then the Road Traffic Act for 2003 is the place to go for more info.

My mistake Tis section 88 of the environment act 1995


the fixed penalty notice was established in 2002.

The Road Traffic (Vehicle Emissions) (Fixed Penalty) (England) Regulations 2002 is the relevant act, part six.

STOPPING OF ENGINES

Stopping of engine when vehicle stationary
12. - (1) An authorised person who has reasonable cause to believe that the driver of a vehicle that is stationary on a road is committing a stationary idling offence may, upon production of evidence of his authorisation, require him to stop the running of the engine of that vehicle.

(2) A person who fails to comply with a requirement under paragraph (1) shall be guilty of an offence and be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.

Issue of fixed penalty notice: stationary idling offence
13. An authorised person who considers that a stationary idling offence has been committed may, in accordance with Part 7, issue a fixed penalty notice to the driver of the vehicle.

Furnishing of information for the purposes of Part 6
14. - (1) In connection with the discharge of his functions under this Part, an authorised person may require the driver of a vehicle in respect of which a requirement under regulation 12(1) is imposed to disclose to him -

(a) his name and address;

(b) his date of birth; and

(c) if he is not the person in whose name the vehicle is registered under the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994[8] at the time that the requirement is imposed, the name of that person.

And the rest of the story........... amazing how cut and paste is used to make one's self look good. Well done Discool., never did believe that bull **** as owner manuals have a warm up period and cool down period for diesels, which most owner do not pay attention to as most know all
