Landy for 17 year old??!!

Wandering if insurance would be ridiculous for a 17 year old!!

Just had the phone call..........been in an accident! She & boyfriend fine, thank goodness. (bloody farmers, who cant drive with trailers!!)

Very upset, bless her, dreading coming home, incase I shout at her!
She can't quite get the concept, that I am just glad they are both coming home!

Bought her a new Corsa, now thinking she would be so much safer in a Defender!! (especially around here, people just can't drive!)

Try the NFU, not sure about 17 yo - but mates OH @ 20 got cheaper insurance on a hippo that a shoebox... shame the hippo was a typical gaylander!

Yup, NFU are very good for younger drivers. Although, saying that, I did nicely with Lancaster.

I'm 22, 5 months with a full driving liscense and insure two Landys, fully comp, for under £700 in total.

Quinn Direct specialise in insuring younger driver's, my brother paid £480 fully comp for himself last year (1.8 Vectra) .... this year he only paid £385 WITH his 21 yr old girlfriend on the policy as well....

At the risk of upsetting the applecart........

Occupants of a 3 year old corsa are likely to be much safer than occupants of a defender of similar cash value. Airbags, ABS, traction control, brake assist/distribution, crumple zones designed to modern standards all these make a car safe, not bieng big heavy and having a rigid chassis that has no give in it. From experience, at the scene of a 2 car collision, in general the car that looks most damaged has the least damage to the occupants.

Insurance cost is based partly around how safe a car is considered by the insurers. As an example, we have in the family, K plate disco 200tdi. R plate pug 406 1.8, and an N plate 4litre jeep cherokee sport with some minor mods.

Cheapest to insure? the Jeep, its considered safest simply by way of ABS being fitted, it also has just the one airbag. Next comes the pug courtesy of its twin airbags, and with no "extra" safety features and relatively no performance at all the disco comes last.

I payied £2500 when i was 17 for the Td 90
at 18 got a tdi 90 was £1200
then at 19 was £440
This is all with my mum on the policy
Fully comp.

NFU wont insure under 21's any more, although if u already have a policy with them they will. But they didnt give me the cheapest quote

Who was that with? And were you main driver?

£440-1200 sounds like a nice price compared to the 2 grand quotes I've been getting!

You'd have thought so wouldn't you....
But the department for transport seem to disagree.

5 times more likely to die/have serious injury in a corsa than a defender.

Lots of variable factors I'm sure but I like my odds in a defender!

That only proves that the people driving corsas are driving 5 times as stupidly, not that the Landy is safer. But that'll keep insurance down, I suppose...

I am with NFU, but have the corsa & her on another policy with Swift £500 fully comp, so pretty good.

It's not her I am worried about, she is a fantastic driver, has been driving from a young age, cars, 4 x 4's, motorbikes, quads etc....
Luckily she handled the incident very well........going around a very sharp bend......4 x 4 & massive trailer cut the corner, trailer trashed the side of her car. Could of been a lot worse if she had panicked!

It's others on the road! Unfortunatley all vehicles around here are so huge, & not driven well, or with any care or consideration!

The corsa seems so vunerable (but hopefully cheap to repair! lol waiting for a quote)
It pratically fits underneath my landy!! lol

I will just stick her back in the bubble.....that's inbedded in cottonwool!!.....& never let her out again!! lol

i reckon that's part of the trouble with corsas - they are so small you often don't see them till it's too late

if your driving an LGV or a tractor pulling a feck ork slurry tank you could probably run one over and not notice

whereas a nice big ugly LR is going to be much harder not to notice

Im convinced me indicators dont work on the drive to work, cos no ****er sees me even tho i indicate!

Yup main driver. Its through the AA dont know who they got me the insurance with though.

Is it not on your certificate?

I your position, I would investigate the following.

Insure your daughters car, with you as owner, but ONLY her as the driver. That way you get benefit of your NCB, without insurer whinging about who is the main user, and refusing to pay up.

You then start a new policy for yourself, without NCB, but the combined premiums are likely to be cheaper than the normal way. I think its legal. Discuss!

Of course if you have sufficient warning, it is possible to turn one FULL-NCB into two, but takes a year to get the real benefit ..... and a few £££ wasted in the meantime. Then you can have one each.

best way is go compare and the internet searches i have a series 3 (2+1/4 petrol)
and looked over 3 hours and eventualy got a good qoute for a 19 year old no ncb 3points and a ban and found 1 via gocompare thru fortis for only £450 thats with modifications like 2 roofs hard and rag top with bigger wheels and other upgrades so found it pritty cheap . and as for girls they get even cheaper insurance anyway so should be cheaper

I am with the co-operative insurance, fully comp with my 200tdi 90 2 years no claims and its about £400!! I just turned 21 too, and I don't think a defender is necessarily safer than a small car with ABS, airbags etc, but I live in the sticks and it means I don't get stuck when pulling over on narrow lanes, and it also means assholes in BMW's don't push you off the road, you can push them off, or move over YOUR half and the rest is up to them!!! It is good for respect on the road if you don't abuse it.
