Me again!
First off thanks to all those who have answered my previous posts, much appreciated information and knowledge, helped me out no end and definitely learning more and more about these beautiful machines everyday.
So, after sorting the propshaft out and UJs - as in previous post - all seems hunky dory, no major noises or vibration to be heard, not that there was much before, but after applying some pressure on the front propshaft rear I found a good bit of movement between the yoke and the flange, hence the replacement.
Anyway, taking it out for a drive yesterday, I noticed a rattle, which I did hear a few days prior, almost like a washer rattling, very intermittent with no rhythm. There are a few loose washers near the exhaust, which are now sorted, but the more sinister rattling I heard yesterday seems to be coming from deep inside either the transfer box or gearbox. Like a ticking rattling. Truth be told, it may have always been there, but I've never really crawled under the old girl when she is running before, so maybe I just haven't noticed it. Although, it is quite noticeable when it's running and I'm standing outside the door listening. Definitely sounds dodgy, like a death rattle, something big and costly knowing my luck, mechanical sounding in pitch and timing, matches the engine.
No difference when applying the clutch, but when slightly upping the revs - not much at all - it disappears. So I guess it can't be anything too sinister as surely if it was an in depth issue, would it not get worse? Also, when changing up through the gears, it's noticeable during gear changes, so when I'm not upping the revs or accelerating, can hear that faint rattly ticking sound underneath. When cruising along 3rd, 4th, no issues. Just when at idle.
Then again, when I rolled her forward and applied the handbrake, the noise went away, as I was on more of an uneven surface.
Driving home after my shift early this morning, no noise or rattling during first startup or during gear changes. Very odd and intermittent. One would think if it was seriously mechanical, it would be constant? Also hear it when turning off the engine, when she rumbles down to shutdown, which is not nice to hear.
Anyway, top points to anyway who actually reads this whole post! Didn't realise how long it was, but though it worth mentioning in detail. Worth mentioning there is a small crack in the gearbox, running up the casement near the drain plug, used to live on a farm, so probably some heavy handed farmhand driving it home too tight, who knows. Not major at present, but getting an R380 short bellhousing gearbox from ashcroft fitted soon. Or might just opt for an LT77 direct replacement. Deffo cheaper option. Though all that being said, the amount of issues I hear with new gearboxes and parts being fitted and still more problems, I guess you can't win either way.
Thanks all in advance!
p.s. if anyone knows of anyone top notch old school Land Rover mechanics, garages, repair shops in the Berkshire area, please let me know. I won't be attempting a gearbox replacement myself.
