just breaking in to off roading any advice?

Don't go alone
Don't start buying suspension lifts, aggressive tyres, winches etc until you know what your vehicle will do in standard form and what you ultimately want from your vehicle.
Make sure you have a decent range of recovery ropes/strops and shackles BEFORE going offroad.
Make sure you have decent recovery points fitted BEFORE venturing out.
Get ordanance survey maps and make sure you are on legal byways at all times.
Take plenty of pics.
If possible go with some experienced peeps and get a cb to cummunicate with them.

buy jate rings a good rope/recovery strop and some fuel.That will be all the gear ya need

im assuming his got one.Other wise fitting the jate rings is gonna be iffy
If you've got the cash stick with the BFG AT's otherwise have a look at General Grabber AT2's, very similar tyre, and is cheaper.
BFG AT is a good tyre 
Very good on the road, Good Off Road and last ages! The set on our Discovery have done about 50K and still have about half the tread left.
What off roading are you doing? BFG AT's are good for laning but if you are doing P&P's twice a month then maybe not.
BTW, If you are replacing 3 i would go the whole hog and replace all 4.

the tyres are 225 75 and im gonna replace all 4 its just a hobby but when my disco is ready im gonna get involved with buxton off road club if they will have me, i have seen them general grabbers an the tread is pretty much the same are they as good mileage wise?
Slightly softer compound, but the difference in price makes up for the difference in wear rate, I've done 25k on mine so far and still lots of tread to go.

I bet after going to a couple of pay & play days, you want mud terrains, and bigger ones than 225/75! But by all means try the (more/less) original size first, before getting bigger tyres etc. I went from standard road tread 205/80R16 to 265/75R16 mud terrain and the difference is significant.
