drain oil and drop sump first and check to see how much crap is floating about in the gearbox !

if its okay then you can put the old oil back in if you want to and save spending out on new.

but i wouldn't go changing the cooler or anything else until you know the state of the box first

if going down the oil change route would it be worth putting something like lucas autobox additive in oil
i have done this with other cars before with reasonable results

I wouldn't put anything else other than the recommended oil in these boxes !

The oil is specialised enough as it it, hence any old transmission oil won't do.

pulled the bottom off today
a mass of swarf and metalflake
the box itself looks like a recent recon one.took the block off and cleaned it out the oil in there was not too contaminated.
however took the oil cooler off and it was virtually blocked with metallic particals.
dont know if the box was replaced and the torque convertor was nt or the oil cooler wasnt cleaned.it didnt appear to ever have been removed.
there appears to be a slight drip coming from the torque convertor area and there was nowhere near 10l of auto fluid drained from system,i would guess around 5/6 l in total.
