Is this the clutch or something else?

Hi,

2004 Td4.... Over last couple of weeks have noticed that the bitting point on the pedal is getting lower and lower. So much so, that its quite hard to get in gear now and the pedal is on the carpet. First 60% of the pedal travel doesnt do anything at all, just slack.

Have described this to my garage (im working away in London just now) and he suggests it could be release bearing and that would be best to get a new clutch fitted at same time and could possibly need a new DMF too.

Reading other posts on ere I wonder if this is likely or is there anything else it could be?

Seems to drive fine, once in gear, clutch aint slipping as far as I can tell.

Any opinions or things to check?

The freelander has a hydraulic clutch assembly and to me it sounds like the slave cylinder seals may have gone this is inside the bell housing. Guess what £££££££ gearbox off. a back street mechanic is best for this clutch kit is quite cheap £70 dual mass flywheel a massive £3-450 and of course slave and master cylinder set about £60. if you find a decent back street garage this would maybe cost you £800.i was quoted £1600 from one garage. hunt about for better price they are out there.

Thanks, managaed to coax it out of central london and get to the services on the M6 toll but couldnt get it into gear on the car park. RAC came out and topped up the master cylinder and bleeded air out the system. Gave me some more in the pedal, enough to get me home and to the garage the next morning.

Diagnosed as the slave cylinder so he has changed slave, clutch plate and DMF (as that was worn too). £996 all in.

Just about to go and collect it.

First major thing to go wrong in it and after my sisters Mini CooperD at 2 years old and 19,000 having the same work done at £1350 not covered under warranty I dont think thats too bad with the TD4's mileage of 94,000!
