Is it me, or are the later RR's like the p38

I know that the "NEW" Range Rover has been about for around 9 years now and it was hailed as the answer to all the problems encountered by the P38.
However I find more & more electronic faults being posted relating to the electronic "Gizmo's" on them.

Am I alone in thinking that they are turning out to be the same, reliability wise, as the good old P38 ?
O.k., they may look more "Modern" than the P38, depending on individual taste, but is it a can of worms waiting to open.
Although my P38 is still giving me trouble free and reliable service, sometimes I still yearn for my old Classic, 3.9 SE and it's "Bombproof" qualites which epitomised the LR pedigree.
 
It's not just me then.
When I eventually managed to scrape the money together to buy my P38 I was a bit sorry that I couldn't afford one of the newer models. (Although I DO prefer the look of the P38).
Now that I see more and more threads started on here by L322 owners with very similar weird faults to the P38 I've changed my mind.
Now I'm glad that I bought a P38, at least when I have problems there's someone on here to take the ****, I mean help out.

Given time my guess is that the L322 will become more troublesome than the P38. As well as the electrickery you have weak gearboxes and the front prop problem, and the bits are horribly expensive.
 
yep. would sooner stick to classics me self.
I've liked the look of the P38, and even commented on one I saw parked up today with lovely interior. They're gettin cheaper than good classics too. Shame about the leccy issues, which is why some are so cheap I guess
 
I don't think this is unique to range rovers all modern cars with their complex electronics seem plagued with problems and faults
you can't even booster start some models without it corrupting or frying the ecu's
I had a nasty miss fire and cutting out on one of my cars it took me all of 15 minutes to fix I cleaned the points and regaped them and what do you know one perfect running triumph tr7
something to be said for old simple technology or lack of it in this instant lol
 
Starting to see alot of 322 elec problems, not helped by eas plugs still letting water in poor quality miring and insisting on pulling looms tightly round sharp edges. As well as that we have ecu failure heater fan resistors going and the ability to flatten a new battery in about two hours. Why do we like these things again???
 
Just been reading your responses..thanks Guys, it appears that I am not alone in my thinking....so far. Let's see what the owners of "New" Rangies really think, c'mon fellas/gals give us your HONEST opinion, a few of you have been previous owners of P38's and I assume, traded up to get away from the P38 problems, BUT....have you jumped out of the frying pan into the fire ?????

I take on board Prius's comments and agree that the old style engine electrics were straightforward and usually an easy fix.I have to say however that I find the EFI systems more reliable than the old points and condenser system with it's limited capabilities as you used to set the gap and timing and away you went, at least you could always get yourself home !!! That was the beauty of the old V8's and other cars, they would run with 2 or more cylinders asleep.

Do agree that the simpler the better (bit like myself) I still run carb V8 but agree the 3.9 cux system give very little trouble, especialy the type that stopped you getting home. Points are good as far as you can re gap them and off you go but if condensor goes you are back in the well known creek.
 
Don't know if the new ones are naff or not. But ALL Range rovers are absolute class at deception. You can download loads of porn and store it under Rangie Bits. And nobody in the house will every look to see what it rely is. Class.
 
well the good old p38 i owned for 7 years in my avatar was a bloody good motor and in all the years i owned it never had any electrical or any other problems really, i own a 5 year old 322 td6 now and to be honest if you was to compare class and ride the 322 wins hands down and does every thing better than the p38 but the build quality is a load of crap. my old 38 had 170k on the clock when i sold it and never had any corrosion anywhere, this 322 has bullbles on the trim that goes up the side of the windows on the doors, on the mirrors and first signs on the rear arches that landrover wont do anything about. makes me wonder what there going to be like in 15 years, the 38 i think was built to last (body wise) unlike the modern crap that comes out lode lane now. well thats my view anyway.
 
As much as I would love an L322, I have spent years getting my head round the P38 issues.
Now I am so comfortable with them, that I would approach the steep
learning curve required with the L322 with trepidation.

Still doesn't stop me wanting one though.
 
Well guys there are many p38 lovers over here....first of all I agree with one friend who wrote that all Rangies are a class of their own and there is nothing to compare them.however I had a p38 for more than 5 years and almost every 3 months I was at the mechanic the last 2 years.spend a lot of money fixing things, the most common of course the EAS problem.now I own the RR SC 2007 model and I can definitely say it's a piece of art-sound,speed, on road, off road, .I don't know how it will work in ten years but I can say that land rover learned from the old mistakes.

yes but in 15 minutes and a screw driver and armed with some loose change you can fix it your self and carry on with your day
 
the first few years of production it was a bmw with a different skirt on 2005/06 model years gained the jag engines and the ford electronic platforms the problem is many who buy them once out of warranty cant afford to service or repair them so the faults get left next owners does not realise it has problems sells it on third owner has all the problems.

the p38a was rushed into production the l322 was a hack to be honest bmw cast off rebodied so all the x5 problems very inhierted the latter models are the better ones to aim for lots of the issues were addressed by the ford team on the face lift.

coman problems
tds egr valve
injector failure
secondary primer pump
steering colum
heater fan resister
auxillary heater failure
seat switchs
eas
hdc
sticking calipers
software upgrades and issues
suspension bushs worse than a p38 or classic was
auto box failures
front diff failure
noisy rear diffs

on the v8
tapping engines due to poor servicing
timing chain failures


on the p38a
simple
becm
eas
porus block
poorly serviced problems auto falure

dare i say it and i fix then all on a daily basis classic or p38a any day!

In a similar position as far as work goes, and don't want to disagree too much but before we get to sentimental we should mention:
matrix o-rings
blend motors
rad arm bushes
broken wires
coil packs
a/c condensers
diesel tank pumps
h/p pumps
door latches
to name a few of the common ones, but still like them
