To fiddle or not to fiddle that is the question

Hi Tottot
It's the original zenith 36. The landy only has less than 25k on the clock and I have most of the old mots to verify it so I'm not sure about wear. Having said that it's not good on the old mpg even for a landy and all of my previous work on it has been in an effort to get it somewhere near the 15mpg mark. I have had a lot of problems gertting a nice even tickover which it now does, but stripping the carb goes against saying number two, " if you fiddle with that, you'll be opening a can of worms"

Col

Have ever stripped it down to look at throttle spindle etc. ?

I'd check the dizzy plate too, a squirt of 3-in-1 down the inside of the spindle, on the pad ... a light smear of grease under the bottom plate and the barest of wipes on the spindle the rotor arm sits on ...

No, I keep looking at it and wanting to but the last time I took a carb apart it was a twin choke Webber for a mk3 cortina. I only cleaned it out but the bloody car never worked properly again. Is it just a case of removing the carb and checking for spindle play by wiggling it or am I gonna need vernias and other such nonsense.

The wiggle test is good, also you can look down the throat and see if the butterfly sits 'well' ...

If there is one thing I'm certain about, it's that the dizzy doesn't need any more lubrication, it was oilyer than the water around the Exon Valdez.

Now, someone, MHM ? will have to check my drivel ...

But is it a 2.25 standard issue Landy engine you have ?

If so; do you have a timing hatch/cover on the flywheel cover ? early enjun

or a three-pronged pointer on the timing cover and a notch in the flywheel ? Later injun

Too complicated :). Try method above - it's was written by eedjits, for eedjits ;).

I've noticed that you don't see many dizzys these days with the knurled knob for fine adjustment any more, are they defunct or just behaving?

I'm familiar with setting the static timing with a bulb, and pinch clamp ... but 'pinking' can be caused by wear in the dizzy shaft, (movement sideways) ...

Righto, enough drivel ...
