Yes, another Series 3 project (making use of all the others so i know what (not) to do ):D

Ex-military S3 109, circa 1974, released into civvie st in 1995.

Drivers door.jpg

Overall condition not bad for His age, but a few issues needing addressed:

Canvas – porous to say the least.

Roof canvas.JPG

Extra lights and such – wiring all over the place

excess wiring.JPG

Paintwork – frankly a mess! Original green is in better condition than the sand colour that used to cover it.

bonnet paintjob.JPG

Chassis – issues with the rear quarter

Bulkhead – issues.

Plan: strip back to rolling chassis, repair chassis,
investigate bulkhead (repair or replace???)
Discuss paintwork with local bodyshop, see what is involved, determine cost, then probably do it myself!
Rebuild, replacing bushes as required, rewiring and re-routing as appropriate,
replace canvas,
apply for Historic status – happy days!

2 Other teeny weeny details: engine is a 2.8 Daihatsu of which I know nothing.

Gearbox and drivetrain are currently in the back – but apparently everything is present, along with an extra gearbox or 2, and just needs refitting. Yeah…heard that before.
:)

OK, having cleared the decks, disposed of excess motor vehicles, evicted the cat from the driver’s seat, and utilising the gaps between the wintry showers, I can finally start work on Sgt Cash

Starting with removing the canvas and hoops over the rear section in order to investigate the various bits and pieces of unknown origin that lay hidden within.

Floor and tunnel seem ok, prop shafts both present, interesting array of early-life wiring, and three gearboxes.

And low and behold, an empty tub.

Enough for 1 day.

Right, rest of the canvas has been removed, along with the hoops. Have put a sidebar on the purchase list for future consideration.

Seats removed – interesting pair!

Previous owner liked his music….or subscribed to the turn-it-up-and-hide-the-problem approach to car maintenance.

Bolts along the back of the seats removed. Side and top door frames removed

top stripped.JPG

Rather disparate seatbelts - one original fixed style, one replacement retractable type.– both removed.

Time to get underneath, when the rain stops. Need to split the sill, remove any remaining chassis connections, then the rear wiring, and finally the rear crossmember bolts. I suspect they may take a little effort/heat.

On the assumption that these fittings will be AF types, I was looking at upgrading the current toolbox with a few of the older sockets and spanners required. Fell out with Halfords, big time. Their website wouldn’t let me checkout. Shrugs, no biggie,. Do it by phone….I thought. But apparently they cannot give trade card discount on telephone orders. Not even when their website is down asks I? No. Store or online only. Store is a 60 mile round trip. Online is broke. Sorry, can’t help.

look on ebay etc. for AF, or ask around locally (shops / fb etc.) as theres always people with 'old' tools doing nothing....

theres plenty of ex-REME tooling out there, some high-quality for pennies:cool:

I've doubles / trebbles and more of AF, WW and some obscure tooling dating back to when god was an apprentace (I had them as 'old' tools when I started my apprentaceship:oops:)

Rich.

I am quite sure if I had a rummage around in the various boxes, drawers and containers in the garage, shed, other shed, greenhouse and playhouse I could find all the sockets and spanners that I would need. However, I discovered while doing the Disco Chassis 18 months back that I have now reached the age where I like to be able to just open the box and know that the right socket will be there, or go to the appropriate rack and lay my hand on the spanner in question with out too much fuss. For the outlay required - and the lifetime guarantee attached...what's not to like? :D

They also do some tray inserts which fit in a tool tray at halfrauds.
But I’m like you. Have a case and I can make sure all are back in & then locked away after use. Mrs has her own tools.
Vintage AF WW for the S1.

If the site is down ask how you can make a purchase like click & collect?
If they have a problem ask to speak to someone higher up to help.
(This COVID crap where you can’t go shopping or workers do things they used to do and use it now as an excuse)

When we sold our old Series III greenhouse, we gave him all the AF/Whit sockets and spanners we had ...

Not much progress this week. Work is the curse of the land rover classes :(

However, did manage to get the tub free and ready to lift.

tub free rear.JPG

Ready to lift off, but it is one heavy bu66er

Once removed I can confirm the requirement of the rear quarter replacement, and hopefully not the full chassis :D

Paint ordered and due for delivery before the end of the week.

:)

Been considering the logistics of the bulkhead replacement.
Owens Engineering seem to be the recommended outlet, but they have a FIVE MONTH lead time.....and I don't want to be doing it in the depths of winter:eek:
Shielder seem to be of the opinion that all series 3 bulkheads are the same and only advertise 1

I did have an interesting conversation with one of the guys at Pegasus. A quick look at 4 pics and he was able to confirm the year of manufacture, and on noting that the current one has been adapted to facilitate the engine change (diahatsu 2.8l) and offered to manufacture the new one to fit, Lead time of around 6 weeks. Result!! Hoping to place order this coming week, once delivery is confirmed.

:)

So, having adapted the bogey I made for the Disco chassis to fit under the tub, I flipped it over, positioned the bogey, and now have freedom of movement :D

The underside is what i might class as "interesting". o_O
Looks like someone has undersealed it with cement slurry

underside 3.JPG

The plan had been to strip it all back and prime/paint it. Not so sure now.

While I am here, anyone know if there is a specific part no for the metal strips connecting the front end of the tub to the chassis? or are they just standard bits of metal cut to length?
