Thanks mate :D

OEM are ok, tbh new is good enough for the time being.

Just strip each axle down, wash all components, inspect and replace as necessary :)

Oh and pics please!

Here's what a swivel looks like stripped down.

It's one of those jobs that's needed doing for years. £300 for all the parts wasn't too bad I thought... Still was £300 I could have done without spending though :(

This afternoon's job is swap the transfer box to see if I can't get rid of the horrible shunt when going into gear....

Now... that horrible shunt....

Well that'll be it then.
All that bloody work to get the manual box in and it's knackered. How on earth it was even driving, I do not know.

yeah my input shaft has play similar, just needs a shim on the input bearing

did you not split the transfer box off the gearbox to check it before it went in?!

Nope, Didn't know spline wear was a problem...

I do now :frusty:

Still, it is a relief knowing that the shunt wasn't just a case of "they all do that sir" and there really was a problem. She should be a lot nicer to drive when this is sorted out.

I drove my friend's D2 that has covered similar mileage and it was like driving a normal car in terms of transmission backlash. That's what convinced me to pull the Tbox off. Well I say me, said friend with the D2 did most of the work!

To be fair the diesel boxes tend to wear the output shaft more due to chatter but all are capable of it.

Luckily mine is hardly worn, and with a cross drilled input gear on the transfer it should prevent any further wear.

I had tremendous clunk when taking up drive when I got the car, most of it was the centre pins in the diff, the rest I assume it in the centre diff which I still have and a small amount in the main box and its output shaft to an extend.

Oh plus every component between the petrol flap and the tyres which has some amount of slop in it these days!

spline wear was the curse of lt77s and also r380s till cross drilled gear was introduced its caused by lack of lubrication

Now I realise this question has been asked many times before, but as far as I can tell, it's been in relation to the r380. Which oil would you use in an LT77, ATF or mtf 94?

This one looks a bit better.....

This gearbox doesn't have an oil cooler. Does anyone know what's required to make one fit? Can I just drill through the blanks and drill and tap for the bolt holes?

As far as i know the oil cooler ports were fitted to all boxes, but some had cooler plate fitted and some had a bypass plate.

The plates attach to the side of the box with 3 bolts, get some pics up of what you have!

This is v8 spec lt77 right?
