bell housings are all the same fastening to enigne , an r380 after lt77 would be simple , tdi box would need input shaft as well as bell housing to fit v8 as spigot bush in crank on v8 is 3/4 or 19mm ish diesel 7/8 22mm ish

That was the problem with mine when trying to get a spigot to fit, you end up with a 1.75mm wall thickness spigot bush and its very easy to break then. Its 22.25mm in metric for the input shaft on a series box, not sure on TDi though as I never measured the one I had

unless as you say you swap the shaft but the price on them is expensive! think it was £95 + VAT for a new one from ashcroft and then £150 for a second hand bellhousing from them plus VAT on top of that and deliver

Right so I'd be better off putting an LT-77 in for now and waiting for an R380 V8 when one crops up?

I'm assuming that an RRC and Disco are similar enough that everything like pedal box etc will just swap over?

Really appreciate the help guys :)

I know the auto pedal box plate that bolts to the bulkhead doesn't have fitting for the slave cylinder but it looks like the box plate thing is the same on a disco and a RRC. Either way I could get one off a TDi Disco manual from the scrappy.

R380 V8 is a rare item unfortunately, the best one to get is out of a Disco 2 which is what i am waiting for, but my LT77 is basically ok and has taken some serious batter over past few years with only a couple of simple breakages so far!

I got mine for £250 :p with new bellhousing

Pity it was a disco spec though but now converted, few on ebay atm in east/south yorks area but then again its a lottery with second hand boxes. Mines a rebuild by AW Coventry but some may be ragged to within an inch of their life. Suppose his other option and possibly safer would be to buy a shagged one and rebuild it to brand new so it'll last ?

i think most of the trouble with lt77s was the rear main shaft /input geat wear ,which was also as common on r380 till the introduction of cross drilled input gear has stuck as people dont remember or dont know the real issue etc it becomes a poor box in time

Thankyou guys :) I appreciate the replies to my 3yearold-esque demands. I did look on Paddocks but they seemed to have different ones for the 3.5 and the 3.9
I didn't realise there were 4 speed boxes :s how do I make sure I'm not getting one of those if there's no knob or gearstick and I can't see the underside

For all it's idiosyncrasies I must admit I do like my clunky old lt77, since I've had it apart to replace that bearing it has helped me to understand the noisy bugger a little better and i see it really is a simple enough affair inside, shame my suffix H synchro rings are poor, like JM says a suffix G really is the one to aim for.

Has to be said that a good suffix G lt77 will last a very long time, whereas the weak areas inside an early R380 could cause more trouble upfront.

I say again, the suffix L R380 as fitted to late disco 2 is also the best by far, offering the best chance of a long lasting gearbox with the best driving characteristics.

Now that I've had mine out a few times I don't have any fears of the job and would happily temporarily fit a box for the time being until something better came along.

Cheers :)

Well after a couple of hours fiddling the centre console, gear gaiters etc are out and everything bar the bellhousing bolts are undone :)
