After resusitating myself from the shock of being told my engine was shagged and needed rebuilding i've being having a think (most of the bloody night). I can't afford to pay the price i was quoted for the parts or the labour - live in ireland and things can geta bit hairy price wise over here - so i've decided to enlist the help of a couple of mechanic friends, for advice and support, and leap in at the deep end and have a bash myself.

Been looking at some spares places (paddocks, craddocks, etc), which confirmed my suspicions about parts pricing over here, and have noticed some massive differences in price for the same item; the difference in the actual item being that one is a genuine part and the other is pattern.

Whats the general opinion on using pattern parts over genuine? Is there an issue with longevity, quality etc? or, is it just the landrover name i'd be paying for?

All views greatly appreciated.

depends where the part orginates. some plastic brake shoes from chad dint work too well and the same fer oil seals from taiwan.. But i think paddocks stuff is all ok. can't say i've heard of any problems from then with the quality of parts whether OE or not. if yer in doubt buy OE if you trust the supplier buy non OE

Ya get what ya pay for. but most pattern parts are ok. The question you have to ask is how long will I keep the old girl once I've finished the rebuild. If it's gonna be years then use the best you can afford. If it's probably not gonna be that long then use pattern parts and by the time they become a problem at least it won't be yours. Don't forget your gonna be saving a fortune on labour costs, so you can afford to spend a little bit more on the parts.

aye but dint fer get that a lot of pattern bits are really the real thing but without the name on it.. i could direct you to a jag site where someone had this dilema, buy OE or pattern bits?. he went fer the pattern bit then a few weeks later found out that his pattern bits was made by the same jap company that made the OE bits.
because the box dint have JAGUAR written on it it wur a lot cheaper

Thanks a million for that gentlemen. I think i'll be going for a mix-up - will be getting most stuff from Paddocks anyway, so as you say, all should be well.

Aiming to keep the heap for as long as i can - this is going to be an ongoing project, so doing it right from the start really is the only way to go.

Cheers.

I work on the principle if its cheep and it takes a lot of effort to change it ie the oil seal on the op shaft of the engine then spend out and get a genuine one. Other wise most patten parts are ok just use some intelligence when ordering.

What engine is it? Land Rover dont make parts they just design them pal. All parts are sourced from outside the company to companies that give them the best price. AE, Mahle, Mann, Vandervell all make parts for VA's. If you have 2 1/4 / 2.5 diesel or petrol engine you should be able to buy what you want from these guys About Legs , the parts here are of OE quality or higher, probably better that NOS genuine parts as the quality in the metalurgy has improved so much.

Hi Riggaz ! Tis a 2.25 diesel.

I checked out legs - looks good to me and may well be on the inernet list of places to go with my shopping list.

Turner engineering are LR engine specialists and probably THE people to speak to and sell parts for 2.25 diesel, they will probably sell you an engine kit pal, they know a thing or to.

i had a wheel bearing seize on my , i was doing 60 and the front drivers side wheel locked up dragging me into on coming traffic.
I'm lucky i didn't kill someone.

when i pulled the hub apart i found that the tab on the lock washer had failed and the hub nuts had tightened them selves up.

i went out and bought new locking washers from a main dealer and the difference in quality was instantly obvious , they cost twice as much but i could see why. they were at least 1 - 2 mil thicker and much heavier.

on the same note original wheel bearings are made by timken , they are 30 odd quid each from a main dealer , 10 - 12 quid from anywhere else , just make sure they are timken and not some other crap , i bought some kudju or mudjo or something bearings once and they lasted only a few thousand miles.

anyways , if the part is critical , buy genuine.

i noticed below on the glencoyne website (he fixes landrovers)

"A couple of the larger aftermarket suppliers (naming no names) have major quality control issues, to the extent that I am no longer prepared to use non-genuine mainshafts, layshafts, gears and various other parts. "

anybody agree with this , had any pattern gbox bits fail a bit soonr than youd like

Im with genuine parts if reasonable cost

I will say get Genuine parts 2 things to bare in mind with the part you fix, if its a crap job and you don't want to do it again use or hard access, genuine every time, you'll have to do the job again when the generic part fails and you'll have to buy the part again, so where did you save on cost then?

i have a SII 58 done on generic parts the first time ....a very big mistake on my part, there all now in the bin, and i wastes a lot of ££ buying them just to replace them again with genuine Lucas Gurling parts, (i coud'nt understand why my brakes wouldn't work with all new parts on them ) and had to do the job all over again, not just me i know of plenty of others who have had problems with brake parts from craddocks paddocks etc

but then its up to you (thats what was said to me when i got the parts the first time and i didn't take the advice i was given)

you need to know that there is a difference between cheap "made in chad" stuff and proper stuff that just doesn't have the landrover name on it.

does landrover make a lift kit for 90's?

if not then all the lift kits that have bin fitted arn't genuine.

is the battery made by another company crap just cause its not the same as the one fitted by LR

is a bearing made by GKN in a box with landrover written on it any different to a bearing made by GKN in a box sans landrover on it?

you can go to a landrover dealer and buy yer bearings and seals for a small fortune or go to a bearing factors and buy the identical thing for a lot less
