I have finally convinced my wife that a Defender 90 would be a good idea!

She wants me to consider ex-MOD vehicles, although I know nothing about them.

Does anyone know whether the engines are the same? ie did they have the old diesel turbo engine until around 1990 and then change to the 200tdi and then the 300tdi like the general production cars?

I have also read somewhere that they sometimes have 24v electrics instead of 12v. Does this cause much of a problem? I presume it will affect things like radio, battery, alternator etc but are parts still readily available?

Finally, do you think this is a good option to consider, or are ex-MOD generally best left alone?

most older ex mod ones i know of have the 2.5 na engine..an ex mod will set you back a bit more but enthusiasts love em..they will also be maintained to the highest standard..if you can find one i would certainly have a look.you dont say what you intend to use it for?..
 
Yeah Michael is spot on. The military land rovers also have a heavy duty chassis (considerable thicker steel than those on a 200tdi or later) which will generally last longer, especially considering the constant application of waxoyl and general tar like gunk that the military use to prevent rust. There'll also be paint under it all somewhere too, so the life of an ex-mod vehicle is likely to be considerable higher.

As far as I'm aware the military never touched the 2.5 Turbo Diesel (19J) because of the known reliability of the N/A (12J). Saying that, the military may well have been the first people to try and test the Turbo Diesel, hence why it got its name as being an unreliable engine, but it's highly unlikely. They did use 200 or 300 tdi engines in later mod rovers though, but I think that there are still plenty of them running N/A's.

Engine wise, you can guarantee that they have been well looked after. Constant oil changes and filter renewal as well as general maintenance like rings and bearings will all have been high priority so it's not going to pack in on you any time soon! Do remember though that they're more than likely going to be high milage, hard used engines, and if they're not high mileage then they've probably been running stationary to keep people warm inside them somewhere.

Best thing to do is go and have a look!

easy answer - well 2 really......

1) if yu double the volts, yu halve the current. Stops wiring overheating.
2) Aircraft systems (and other MOD systems) use 24Volts.
 
24v used in trucks to aid starter motor.
American trucks of the 70's used 12v lights etc and 24v system for the starter motor. I used to have one and had to swap trailer bulbs every time for 12 v ones.:rolleyes:
 
I was looking at Exmod a while back and came across a guide on the net which I cant find again.Basically it sed that Army landys might have been dropped or driven by a para(worse), marine landys come prepared for wading but have probbaly done loads of amphibious landings through really deep sea water andf RAF ones lead an easy life ferrying them lazy fly boys around airfileds cos they are too loafty to walk.Get a raf one.

good advice

my mate paul was in the Para's for 11 years and everytime he gets in my landy he says things like

this brings back some memories pete, smashin these things about

i said to him about them being well maintained and he said they were badly maintained and proudly abused lol

i'd have a drive in a privately owned one first just to find out what they should sound and drive like just so you have a comparison

the only ones with the 300 tdi's in are the wolf land rover i think

pretty rare and really expensive
 
Lazy RAF boys eh!!! well your right- sat outside the NAAFI just before tea break! But be careful you owt to see how some people drive them, foot to the floor, and if they have rev counters the needle would be wrapped around the pin

As for the ones that get dropped, they would be specially chopped/lightened for the job and would be easy to spot.

Not so Sure about thicker Chassis' tho.
Mabe it seems like that all the older chassis 1985-1989 were thicker or made of better steel than later Defenders. Seen lots of rusty Defenders and loads of old 90's with solid chassis' Jai

Land Rover Wolf have strengthened chassis'

they're about six times stronger than normal defenders

Only two full military specification Wolves (as far as I can determine) have been sold of with the necessary paperwork to allow civilian registration, and this one is neither of these.

it is being sold as a replica.
but looks suspiciously like this one...
