Hi, i have a 1991 discovery 1 V8, it has been fine all summer, last month i went to start it and it turned over but wouldnt fire up, it drowned its self in petrol which washed the oil from the bores and filled up the sump, mechanic replaced oil / plugs and got it running, was fine for the day, next morning the same happened again, wouldnt start and drowned itself in petrol again. if anyone has any ideas please, thanks.

Well there could be a couple of things here.

I need to make sime assumptions first. It is a V8 with hot wire injection and 14CUX ECU and DLM8 distributor. That being the case, you say you have too much fuel; this indicates the fuel pump is working so not a problem with pump, relay or inertia switch.

It could be you have one or two or more sticking injectors that aren't closing properly and so over night fuel is leaking out of the injectors into the bores. You would need to remove all the injectors and send them to a specialist for testing/cleaning.

If it is not the injectors, it is likely your problem is with your ingnition system. So do all the basic bits first - check leads, plugs, rotor arm and dizzy cap. Get an assistant to help you and check for a spark 1) at a plug and 2) from the king lead. If this seems to be in order, check the static timing.

Check reluctor air gap and pick up resistance. Test the ignition amplifier, check the coil. Make sure there are no broken wires or loose connections. Make sure any earth points are clean - really clean!

You should be able to find relevent test data/procedures in Rave or Haynes.

If all that checks out then it could be a sensor somewhere or a ground fault. I believe the injectors are earth switched but I would have thought a problem like this would cause an ecu fault and the efi warning light would come on.

Hope that gives you a place to start.

Pull the vac pipe off the back of the fuel pressure regulator and turn the ignition on - if fuel spurts out the pipe the diaphram has failed.A v8 will manage to burn an awful lot of fuel if it can,to fill the sump as well is probably more than a couple of dribbling injectors can manage.

On a 3.9 v8 in 1990 classic, with hotwire where is the fuel pressure regulator located?

As I am only getting 9.3 mpg and 12mpg on a run I think I might need to check this too!

Well ive just come back from the garage, still no idea, so i have to cut my losses and sell / scrap it, appearing on e-bay soon if anyones interested, my first and last encounter with the green oval, never again.

I know that feeling but you have to stick and stay and make it pay!

You need a better garage, have you tried the idea above my post with the fuel pressure regulator?

I saw the peeps from cuba fix an old battery by taking the top off and hookingit drirect to the mains power lines, you could try that to save some pennys!:p

On that note I got and autobox supply and fit for £800 which aint bad! shame its more than the classics worth!
