Am I right in guessing that this is what a 4.0 looks like?
It does say 4.0 on top doesn't it?

now where are those bananas, Cheetah?

Maybe the ownership document will tell him the CCs.
It tells you it’s a 4.0 GEMs engine. As my pic shows 4.6. Sure you can work it out 🤔

That’s what a THOR looks like.

Now can you see the similarities?

J
Well neither my pic of the 4.0, nor yours of the 4.6, are very different and neither shows the bananas.
So forgive me. I thort there was a 4.6 that looked like yours and a 4.0 that looked like the one with the bananz.
Now I am totally confused.
Are there 3 types of engine then? 2 sizes of GEMS and one THOR?

i have a V8 D1 which looks little like either of these, but then that is only to be expected.
I'll do more H/W, Sir, and then write an essay on it!!

So, Sir, see post #6 on this thread,
BOTH types can be had in either 4 litre or 4.6 litre.
So there are in fact 4 different engines, of two different main types. GEMS and THOR. GEMS have a box, THOR have a bunch of bananz.

(I put this up for other readers who may be as confused as I was, I know you know all this.)

QED!

I await my gold star!! 🤣 🤣 🤣

The 4.0/4.6 both came as Gems and Thor.
The engines are basically the same, but different control ;).

Your 3.9 will have a distributor poking up the front at a guess;).

Of course! It is a proper engine, not a computer with bits of iron, steel and aluminium bolted onto it!! 🤣 🤣 🤣

That is an opinion and a totally different discussion for a separate Fred. Oh and it’s mostly aluminium ;).

Changed the spark plugs on your TD5 lately :p.

J
Aren't you a card!!!
And diesels were invented not long after petrol or other ICE engines!!

But you know how I feel about electrickery, no secret I don't like it. ;)

So I guess the ecu controlling your TD5 or the efi in your 3.9 v8 don’t count then 🤔.

I dislike both. Give me an old fashioned carburettor any time. And as for the diesels, my 300 tdi runs without one.
I only bought the TD5 cos I had to have an auto for W to be able to drive as, due to a meningioma, I was not allowed to drive for 6 months. She has a paralysed left foot so cannot drive a manual. Once I could drive again it was obvious that rust on the 300tdi was a huge problem I could not sort short term.
The flipping TD5 has far too many ECUs for my liking but as the 300tdi needs massive amounts of welding and the D1 V8 is largely an unknown quantity, plus W cannot drive either of them in an emergency, I am where I am with the TD5.

So, the block and the head. But I believe a lot of the rest isn't unless we are counting the housings on stuff like the water pump, the aircon, the alternator, etc etc.
I remember the days when ally heads were put on cast blocks and the fun that ensued due to head gaskets failing.
Soz, I am too old skool.:):):)
