Massive help needed pls. 94Disco, diesel.
Went for a bit of a bimble o/r up some mountain tracks, nothing nasty but steep all the way, Low ratio using 1,2,3 gears all the way up and 2nd gear down. No problems.
Back on the highway heading home, uphill, High ratio in 3rd gear, no apparent problems. Popping/thud noise from underneath/centre of vehicle - slight grinding noise from underneath/front/centre. Lost power/vehicle slowing, thought the Diff Leaver had jumped to neutral (this has occurred a few times in the past, but only when moving off and only when I first the bought the vehicle 7months ago). Stopped the vehicle in lay-by, re-selcted High ratio and 1st gear, let the clutch up and nothing but the sound of props turning!! Imagine the look of Noob fear that wandered across my face.
Locked the Diff in High ratio and fearfully made my way the 3miles home with out further problems. Put the vehicle in High ratio - not Diff lock - selected 1st gear and released the clutch then got out and looked underneath.. front prop-shaft was turning, the rear wasn't moving, no unusual noise.
Please please can anyone help explain what has happened and suggest a solution that doesn't involve hammers or blue-tac.
Fitted Bearmach 3" springs and Pro-comp 9000 shocks all round 3months ago, this changed the angle of prop to diffs.
I am a Noob, feel free to laugh but pleeeeease help;)))):(

obviously drive to one or both wheels has been lost ,put it in difflock and jack each front wheel up in turn one at a time if wheel turns drive to it has been lost obvious parts are cv in drive shaft ,but could be diff or drive member

Hey, thank you guys, was gonna jack it up and see what was turning tomorrow if the torrential rain lets up. Will have a go at it soon as, could you tell me if it's a job that has to be started then carried through to the end, or can I take a look at it, see what parts are needed then put it back together while I wait for parts to arrive. really remote here and I use the vehicle for daily work runs, can I drive it in Diff Lock for short journeys? (4-9 miles daily) or will I wreck it mor?. Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated.

in diff lock as its a positive dog clutch you can drive for as long as you like in 2wd as long as no flailing parts in front axle

I cant remember the guys name!

he has a shop though, near Coimbra I think, not sure where from habibi is..might be miles away.

Overwhelmed by all the help people, thank you once again to all and I stand corrected JP!
Still torrential but i promise not to use the Haynes manual.

A big thankyou to [JP] and The Mad Hat Man for putting me in contact with bmp42.

Living in a foreign country with little grasp of the language I found myself in the un-enviable position of trying to find a mechanic to deal with a shattered front diff, hammered power steering box and a back end that kicked out every time I accelerated or changed gear.

I arrived at the workshop this morning at 0930hrs and it was straight into the work. The initial job and quote encompassed the diff only and the steering box at a later date. Upon arrival I informed bmp42 of the back end kicking out.

By the end of a long day all the work was completed including the back-end kick which came down to a worn bush and was not included in the original quote yet there was no additional charge. Numerous small problems were encountered and all were overcome with out fuss or complaint or extra charge!

To sum up, the service I received was:

a) professional in the extreme.
b) friendly and confident.
c) an utterly competent display and implementation of knowledge.
d) on road focus of vehicle safety.
e) impressive and absolute value for hard earned money.
f) all parts were on site, clean, in good condition and fitted first time.

I was supplied with copious amounts of tea and had my flask refilled for the 100km journey home!
I will thorougly recommend bmp42 and pedro38 to anyone.

Many thanks to all involved from initial contact to the final fix, what I experienced today was nothing short of Gold Dust.
