Driving today around corners and roundabouts the steering felt very lumpy, asif the wheels werent balanced, and was pulling in different directions. Then at slow speeds nasty grinding and clunks were loudly coming from the front end. Then about 2 mins later ---no drive, put into difflock to get home. While the centre diff was on i jacked up each front wheel and gave them a turn, both wheels turn easily. Is it just the sun making me go mad or arent they supposed to not turn if the rear wheels are on the ground in difflock  ?
Basically i think my diff is fooked, any opinions?
I cant take it apart yet as i dont have my tools with me

the diff is the last part which fails from the "transmission link"......join the path between the transfer case and wheels to find the failure: propshaft(Uj/drive flange) - drive shafts - CVjoints.........just if you're unlucky is something fooked in the diff.

I've got a clicking coming from front right wheel which was told could be brake pads floating in holders but it doesn't go away if the brakes are applied, could this be the cv joint in the hub?? And how easy is it to sort as I need the disco on the road as the weekend cars too noisy to transport baby around in

To work on the axle(CVJ/wheel hub bearing/drive shaft) is not a big deal, if u replace the CVJ and the oil seal beneath it dont forget to drain the oil first through the diff's drain plug

It depends how handy u are but to replace a CVJ takes more than 1 hour if just you're clumsy or drunk;)

We swapped a friends diff yesterday, it was banging when on full lock, the reason we swapped the diff though was because off LOTS of play in the bearing and we couldnt find anywhere with a new bearing yesterday and the play was so bad i suspected it would have rattled the diff to bits, anyway when we got it out the little gears had bad bad damage, and the little pin was snapped about 1/5 down its legnth with the short part laying in the bottom of the axle. We didnt check cv's etc as we just unbolted the stub axles from axles and pulled the whole lot out.
