my discs auto box lost reverse after a day at Tong, abandoned it in the workshop went back to it a couple days later, drove ok in forward still no reverse, put it reverse and revved it up and all of a sudden it drop in and started working, checked it over and found some water in auto box so drained and fitted new filter and new oil.

went out last Sunday drove fine back wards and forwards, after about 1 miles pulled in for some fuel and had lost reverse again, next 30 miles to ellerton bank at ripon it blew all the oil out of the dipstick tube and started losing drive.

Pulled box out and checked all the clutches all look ok so debating to just put new box, anyone any idea what is wrong with the box or is it easier just to put new box in than try to repair ??

My old mans 300 had a dodgy auto box, I took it out for him to have a look at it found that it was the clutches right at the back of the box had shattered. I assume after getting hot being worked hard off road and then quickly cooled in a river or trench.

It was then decided a new box was the way as internals for auto boxes are rare and expensive let alone overly complicated. Got a spanker for £150 at a local Land Rover garage.

Hope this helps.

water in the oil or just age and use would do it but the quenching theory isnt correct ,complicated if you dont know what your doing yes but rare ,not very

It was only a thought as there was a muddy tide mark half way up the box. But yes it was very old.
Just for future reference and maybe a little help for spuggy where can you get internals from?

sorted picked up a second hand box and torque converter for £180.00 just seemed to b the quickest fix.
