Hi All

When my fuel level gets to approx 1/4 I keep getting really bad running problems.
Been advised to pull the sender unit and check.
When I remove this is a new tank seal required?
Also what am I looking for on the sender? Is there some kind of filter built into the sender?
The fuel guage seems to be operating fine.

Many thanks

Dave

The manual does say to put a new one on, I've just reused the old one, even though I'd bought a new one (basically because, although it's working the 'new pump' that the previous owner said he'd fitted was a bodged up used one and I think I may have to find a good one sometime). They cost around £11 posted, search the forum, I put the part number on here a short while ago. Fit the seal to the tank neck before trying to fit the sender, don't fit it to the sender or you'll not get it in (fnurr, fnurr)
The lower part of the sender can be carefully removed by using a flat bladed screwdriver to undo the tabs (carefully), there is a mesh filter on the pickup pipe, the base also has a plastic mesh filter and a rubber one way valve. No idea if these things give trouble, but the body is all the same as used for the older type with the pump inside, but aparently cost more (for less).
If the sender is cream-crackered though, someone's selling an unused one with the seal on ebay (ok, it's me cos I bought the wrong one  )

Well Ive removed my sender unit today and took it apart - found lots of crap around the inlet filter and in the lower pot. Ive posted to photos to show what I found.

Just reading the Haynes book for the Oct 2003 to October 2006 Freelander - book #4623

On page 4B.2 it says
Fuel is drawn from a tank under the rear of the vehicle by a tank immersed electric pump, then by a pump/filter assembley mounted under the right hand rear wheel arch, and then forced through a filter to the injection pump.

I thought the later freelanders only had a tank sender unit - no pump!

You are right - Haynes is not up to date on the later ones. Early TD4s had both in tanks pump with combined sender and a further pump in the engine bay. Later ones have a single pump under the drivers rear wheel arch with sender only in the tank as yours does.

So my sender has no pump to fail - the part number for my sender is WQB000020.

Just looked on the microcat and it shows a filter part number WFL000010. Is this a service part for my sender unit?

Any advice really appreciated - car is running like a pig and dont like hot starting.

could be that your Lp pump is on it's way out if it has never been changed....

or injector leaking back..
