Hello all. Can anyone help us? 1998 Discovery 1 3.9. Auto. Engine HRC2411 grossly overheated and of no use. Customer obtained a similar engine HRC241c as replacement. We fitted engine and transfered over plenum chamber ( with sequential gas sy.) Distributor etc. to use original wiring loom. Also torque converter coupling plate and ring gear. Engine turns over but no spark. Donor engine had Distributor with integral amplifier. Original engine seperate amp next to coil. There is battery voltage to + side of coil with ign. on. Have been trying to find a diagram of coil wiring for this set up. What do land Rover call this system? This misshap has come about as the fitter who started the job has had to go! So we are left picking up the pieces. Any help much welcome.:scratching_chin:

3.9 with a distributer would be using lucas 14CUX ECU the distrubuterless engines either had GEMS (similar inlet but square) or THOR Motronic Bosch Injection which has a totally different manifold.

Its the same system on both engines, the ignition amp was moved to keep it cooler.Shouldnt be a problem with the wiring diagram at hand.
Where are you ?

Its the same amp mounted to the side of the dizzy as it would have been mounted to the slam panel by the head light. If you have the 3 pin plug ( only has 2 wire in it ) that plugs onto the ignition amp on the side of the dizzy that needs connecting to the plus+ and neg- of the coil. If it doesn't start then wire could be the wrong way round. From memory black with white trace is neg- and black is positive+.

If it still doesnt start then check in the wiring just to the coil, about 4-6 inches from the terminals there should be two small black resistors connected by black spade connectors on the black/white neg- wire from the coil. This is a resistor that is needed for the ecu to see the correct values on engine speed and is the only link from the ignition system to the ecu and controls injector pulses.

Monday morning: Thanks for replies will check now. Had an "Specialist Auto Electrician" in, who only told us what we already knew. If only he was as professional as his website! Will let you Know how we get on. Cheers all.

I don't know if it will help but do a search of the V8 section for ignition checks or non-starter. Plenty of threads on this.

Maybe this one is of some use?

BTW nearly forgot, Land Rover call the ignition system "Lucas constant energy ignition", dizzy should be a Lucas DLM8. IIRC when ign switched on, should be 12v at coil+ and also at ign amp as amp feed is spliced in to coil feed, might be worth opening the loom and checking for a dry joint or a broken wire. Also carefully check spade connectors that attach to coil, they corrode and the wires break.

Thanks for all your replies and help. Still no further on I'm afraid. Now contacted 5 "AUTO ELECTRICIANS" None can help? The wiring diagrams I have with Autodata do not match the colour codes on the vehicle wiring. I now think maybe an aftermarket immobiliser wired in somewhere. I've never been stuck before in 35 years of engineering. very embarrassing, also cant get paid! Can anyone recommend a good bloke? N.YORKS/CLEVELAND.
