is there a difference between the l series and td4 gearbox ratios?

my freelander seems horribly undergeared, itll pull a trailer from a standing start in 3rd without any complaints for gawds sake but cruising down the motorway it feels like im thrashing the hell out of it.

Its got standard 215 65 16 tyres on but sheesh!

Looking to get some larger tyres to calm it down a bit.

60mph (according to the speedo) is 2900 rpm!

ive ordered some 205 80 16's which should help calm it down, and give it a modicum of offroad ability.

Ouch!

I see what you mean by screaming.

Mine's a TD4. No idea if the ratio's are different, but I'd suggest they are as the tyres alone cannot account for 600rpm.

well the tyres ive ordered have a 7% larger circumference so that should go quite a bit toward calming it down. Also should get the speedo reading accurate.

After I had a second hand IRD fitted I thought that the engine seems to be revving higher at 70mph but not sure what revs its doing will have to look next time, I'm not sure if its an IRD from an earlier car pre 2000 that had different gearing.

Sounds like it could have a 1.8 gearbox in it to me.
Does it have the ID sticker on it ?
