Well, ... We found a doner Disco for the 90 engine transplant and I went to collect it Saturday. I must be mad, Warrington to Cornwall to collect a rusty Disco, but I didn't mind a bit. It was a bit of an iffy trip though as I had to pass through the midlands very close to the black country both going and coming back, and me in a red Disco on me own an all...:D
I was a bit worried about pulling a Disco with a Disco but it turned out ok in the end.
Uneventful trip down, just floored it a bit from Wednesbury to what was Frankly services just to be on the safe side then cruised down M5 to Exeter at a steady sixty. The Disco was a bit further away than I thought but never mind, the weather was fine and I arrived with Hugo the seller just after lunch after covering 280 miles. Lovely cup of tea waiting for me before a test drive and then swap the wheels for the landy wheels I had taken with me as Hugo wished to keep his wheel and tyres.
Strapped the Disco on the trailer and set off home. Flippin eck, steep them hills in Devon aint they, Disco started to overheat on a long slow climb in second gear so I deecided to stop in a lay by and swap the vehicles over. put the red one on the trailer and the new purchase up front and off I went, the 200tdi pulled like a train stormin up hills with no hint of getting hot at all, only problem was that it was a bit unstable on the straight bits so I pulled into a pub car park to have a look.
The tow ball was set a bit higher on the new purchase and I had put my Disco too far forward on the trailer in an effort to level it out but that had put the tow vehicle nose up a but. I dropped the tow ball down an the bracket to level things up and set off up the A30 towards Exeter. Bloody hell, owt over 45 and the trailer started snaking so I stopped after about 15 miles and swapped the vehicles over again. Problem had been the tyres. The high, soft sidewalls were causing the problem and I set off again with the red Disco up front and the new purchace on the trailer with everything level and even again.
After a crap fry up at Exeter services, I made tracks for home, 240 miles left to do and it's 7 pm and I'm not sure if I dare go over 45 as I had nursed it along at 45ish up till then. Can't have this I thought, I'll have to get going, so I increased the speed a little at a time to see how it was. The Disco and trailer ran as straight as a die all the way up to 65 so only the trailer tyres to worry about now. A quick check on the tyres at a service station found them to be all at 17 to 19 degrees c and cool to the touch so I set off again and cruised along at 55 to 60 all the way to Birmingham anly to fine the motorway shut for roadworks. It's a trick I thought, them black country boys are tryin to lure me off the motorway and pinch me 200 tdi, but all was well and after strugglin through Wolverhamton and up to Stafford I managed an uneventful cruise home at 55 to 65 mph.
So, you can tow a Disco with a Disco, and it flies along no problem, just get the weight right and make sure the tyres are hard .. no problem.:)
Forgot to mention that I cured the overheatin problem by puttin the heater on full

not a day out, an expedition ffs thats mental for a disco

Heheheh, feckin nutter ..

We once went from Nottingham to Tiverton for a friday night out 'with the lads', with every intention of having a designated driver and returning home the same night ... however as these things pan out, we didn't get home till about tuesday or wednesday ... But that was beer and birds we went for, not a rusty Disco!!!

I did 400 miles round trip today to collect a series 3 109 I just bought. I thought I was crackers but all the way to cornwall for a scrapper disco is just plain nuts.

Surely the fuel/pies/pop costs make it even madder?? Couldn't you get one a bit closer even if it cost a bit more???
Fuel payed for by the man who bought it, took sandwiches but did buy a fry up and bucket of coffee on the way home, no pop just a flask of tea without milk.
Couldn't find a decent one any closer, this one is a credit to its owner, it drives like new and has done 108 thousand miles, no oil leaks and gearboxes dry as a bone, plus old mot's etc.. No clunks in the transmission and it pulls like a train, couldn't make the clutch slip uphill towing the trailer even when I tried, so new cam belt and straight in with both boxes, no need to split it.
Thought it was the best way to go.:)

I was the guy who sold this gent the Disco. I mean 'gent' in the most sincere way. We agreed the price over e mail and true to his word he kept me informed of his plans.

It was a real pleasure to meet up with you and I did get your text, many thanks.

I did advertise it on this site but actually replied to Land Owners wanted post in the classifieds section here. Up until the day before he took it away I was towing a 2.7 tonne tipper trailer with it.

He's right - it is rusty but mechanically very good. I was toying with the idea of finding a mechanical failed 300TDi and using it to repair that. But I just don't have the facilities or the time to do it quickly.

Land Owner, did you tow it with yours all the way back or did you swap them over, and did you get any more issues with your headlights? (just read your post, you did swap them over then found the tyres you put on mine were not great.)

All the best.

i fetched my disco 200tdi doner from sunderland on newyears day 2 years ago, bit of a mission from nottingham ! after towing it back on a trailer behind my ****ty front wheel drive transit i noticed it was only rated to tow 750 kg ! thank **** it was a quiet day on the roads lol

Sounds like fun, all this towing lark. I really want to take my B+E test so I can start towing, I have the cash and the motivation to do some car restoration/trading but I just need that extra license to be able to tow heavy trailers! :(

Nice to meet you and the Disco is better than expected, would have used it to tow the trailer all the way back but by the time I found out what the stability problem was I was too tired to change wheels over . Found the radio code in the handbook btw, that was the first job before coupling the trailer up.:)
All in all, well worth the trip and thanks again.

Headlamps been ok so far so maybe just a glitch.

Sorry Pete, I meant to tell you the radio code was in there - glad you found it!

Would love to see some photos of the defender rebuild in progress if you have time.

With respect to your headlights, chances are you're looking at either a bad earth or the switch if the fuses are intact.

Switch is easy, just change it for the one on my old disco!

This should take you to the thread I posted on another forum whilst doing the Defender.
Quite interesting to look at the problems I had with a Land Rover that was sold to me as being good and one that I would need to do little or no work, it was off the road for about 18 months whilst I saved for the repairs a bit at a time.

Near to finishing "Trouble" - a little closer today

Goin to swap the relays over tomorrow for headlamps, my mate Tom was really impressed with the way your old Disco drove, it is way better than mine on the mechanical side, brakes are better and the transmission is mint, engine of course is in very good order. Far better than described I thought.
Any way, have a look at the defender repairs and bear in mind that I paid 2800 quid for this vehicle after being conned into believing that it was a good example and well maintained.

Had to take 4 landy wheels with me so needed to drive down with the trailer, was toyin with the idea of borrowing me brother in laws car to tow the trailer down and then puttin it on the trailer to come back, as it happened with the tyres bein bad for handling with the trailer, it was a good job I used the Disco.....even if it is red

".....Far better than described I thought"

Damn, I should have asked for more money! :)

Seriously though , I wasn't upset with what I got out of the deal. My neighbour said "Only you could sell a car with no wheels!". I've decided that I'm going to try to get some more Discovery 2 wheels and stick the tyres I kept on them. I was thinking of selling them on but I don't think I'd be able to get what they're worth to me. After all only 1 has a tread depth below 10mm!

I will probably run 2 sets of tyres when this is done. We will be using the new vehicle more than the old one, and for a mix of work and family.

I done a 268 mile round trip to get my donor disco last week I know exactly what you mean by saying " Bloody hell, owt over 45 and the trailer started snaking " . Same thing happend here using a disco to tow with .
Shat myself .... had to stop on the hard shoulder it was that bad to repositon the
the disco on the trailer..... 4" further forward was all it took to make it stable again but everything looked level when we loaded it up -- More weight on the nose of the trailer is the best way to go :) ..
