Transfer box questions 95 110 tdi

Hi, Please forgive me if this has been done to death before. I have quite a bit of vertical play on the transfer box front prop flange. U/Js are good. The steering is tingly at certain speeds and there is a dribble from the oil seal too. It would seem the front bearing/ oil seal has had it. My...

    Transmission clonks

OK, I know they are crude 1940s bits of kit, but my 110 has started to get extra clonky of late. There seems to be a fair bit of backlash on the rear axle(Salisbury). Is this normal? or do the halfshaft splines wear. Add to that some vertical play in the front transfer box output flange and it...

300tdi long crank time before starting

Despite trying a new set of glow plugs, the Defender is getting hard to start. Twenty seconds of cranking is not unusual, followed by the usual puff of black smoke. Once started performance is normal. Any ideas, chaps? Cheers, Jim.

    Front centre seat belts

Not too happy with the lap belt for my son when he is in the front centre seat. I have a new 5 point harness which was made obsolete for oval racing.2" webbing like normal seatbelt and a quick release aircraft buckle. In red. Anyone fitted a five point? the front crotch/lap strap looks to be...

    A frame ball joint hints?

Noticed a bit of play in the top balljoint on the axle of my 110. Plus a clonk on taking up drive (OK, its a Landrover, I know...) Are these a bit nasty to do? It all looks seriously crusty and like it has been there since 1995. Also guessing buy a genuine joint if possible? There is quite a...

    Black smoke on starting

My 300tdi was run off the highway for much of its life (Airport, airside). I suspect it was run on red for most of that. I drained the tank and changed filters etc last summer, but it still gives a mighty impressive puff the magic dragon waft of black smoke on starting. It has been run on...

    Seized/frozen /stuck- any ideas?

I have got an engine that has not run for at least 35 years, and it has stuck. Very tight. OK, I'd best confess right now, it is not a Landrover engine, but a C series BMC out of a '65 Westminster. I have tried the red diesel down the plugholes treatment, tried a big bar on the pulley but no...

    Strange feeling clutch pedal

Anyone had this on an old Defender (95, 300tdi, R380)? The clutch pedal sometimes sticks down. Also the clutch doesn't clear unless the pedal is right on the floor. It doesn't slip. Hydraulics seem fine. I suspect the release arm is bent or worn? Having wrestled with a clutch on our old...

What's in a name? Insurance bothers

Anyone else had problems renewing their Landrover insurance? Like for instance, coming up on the search as a Pickup when it is a Station wagon. Were all SWs Counties? Mine is a bit lacking in luxuries. My 110 is on the V5 as a 110 SW TDI. Which makes sense to anyone with a bit of real world...

    Defender 300tdi alternator puzzle

I have had charging problems with our '95 Defender. The warning light would flicker and charging was poor so fitted a new alternator today. Now it charges at a lovely 14.5V- but the light is permanently on. Is this a known problem? I'm thinking dodgy block connector or some other wiring fault...

    Tow bar drop plates

Hi again, My 110 was ex airfield and has a weird towing set up on the drop plate for a pin type of coupling. I want to change this and use a normal towball and have seen some drop plates advertised for Series Landrovers. Would a Defender be the same? Can you fit a Nato hitch above a towball...

    Heater cables on a '95 110

Please forgive my ignorance, does the air distribution cable join up somewhere under the dash panel? I suspect it goes to the floor vent flaps but cant see how to get in there. Any advice most welcome! Cheers, Jim

    Heaters that don't

Ok, so I was spoilt with our old Disco 2. The heater was up to Volvo standards. My 110 SW, however, is up to Austin A35 levels of warmth .i.e. pretty dire. Any tips to get a few more degrees of damp busting heat out of it? Coolant temp gets to normal quickly and cables seem ok. A bit early in...

Loud ticking noise from fuel lines

On my '95 110 S/W with a 300TDI, I'm getting a pronounced ticking that gets noisier with engine revs. It runs fine but I can feel pulsing through the plastic fuel lines towards the back. Is this normal? Is there a foam insulator pad missing, or should I quit fussin' and buy a quiet saloon car? ...

Second row seat catches on a Station Wagon

Hello there, Our 1995 110 Station wagon has the dead basic folding seats. You know, like cinema ones used to be in the dim old days. These are locked by sprung catches mounted near the base. I also have a set of much better County type seats which I'd like to replace them with. My query is this...

Crank pulley stuck on a 300TDI - any advice?

Hi all, I'm struggling with my Defender crank pulley. Trying to do the cambelt, it seems someone has glued the pulley on with Loctite or similar. I've got a three leg puller on it at the moment and have tried a hot air gun on the snout of the crank, but don't want to go too mad and wreck the...

    oil recommendations?

The usual minefield when buying oil these days- the Castrol book says 0-30 Edge, or 10/40 B3. Halfords say 10/40 turbo diesel oil, so much choice! Anyone got any good ideas for an old Defender with a 300 tdi, please? cheers, jim.

    Gearlever rattles/sloppy

I have just bought a 110 with the 380 box. My first Defender, though we have had a few Discoveries. Anyway, Is there a nylon bush or similar at the base of the gearstick? Also, the diff lock lever moves across nice and freely, but doesn't seem to click in place- is this normal? Thanks for your...

    New ish to this

Hi, Don't be put off by the German user name (it means Fintail- a reference to 60s Mercs..but that is another story) Always been a Landrover type of kid, but family and the usual sort of things meant a Discovery has to suffice. First an old 200tdi which rotted out, then our TD5 which is great...

    Station wagon seat options

Hi, I have decided to buy a rather tatty 110 station wagon . Rot free, low miles, but.. The seats in it are pretty grim- has anyone tried fitting seats from , say, a Volvo or similar? Ideally I want three high backs across the second row, with proper inertia belts (like on a Disco2). The...
