Hi,
Please forgive me if this has been done to death before.
I have quite a bit of vertical play on the transfer box front prop flange.
U/Js are good.
The steering is tingly at certain speeds and there is a dribble from the oil seal too.
It would seem the front bearing/ oil seal has had it.
My question is, can this be done in situ?
Or is transfer box removal in fact quicker?
Are the seals/bearing etc easily available, and is it a massive job?
I've trawled through the usual youtube stuff, most of which seems to be done on a bench.
Thanks for your patience,
Jim.

I had this seal replaced recently and they did it in situ in a couple of hours, but it needs to be done from a pit or on a ramp to properly get to it.

I think with a bearing, you might have to take it right out and get it on the bench!

Also, if you have it the Tbox down, check the chassis underneath as on mine it had rusted through above where the transmission brake was spinning and dumping water and mud around it.

Only minor welding required but worth doing while you have it off!

The output shafts are only supported in a single ball bearing race, so it's rather prone to wear. Fortunately, the internal mechanism of the transfer box has tapered rollers almost everywhere else, which are typically much more robust.

So, can you get away with changing just the front one?
I guess the seal surface on the flange gets grooved too.

Yes, there's no reason why you can't just change the front one, if that's all that needs doing. If the surface that the seal bears against is poor, it's probably easiest just to get another output flange. A new seal and output flange stopped mine leaking.

Yes, you can do this in situ. There's even a Buster's guide:

The rear one is very similar, once you take the handbrake off.

Buster's made up some tools to do this, but you can improvise. I've managed it by wedging a bar between the bolts on the flange to stop it turning whilst undoing the nut, and using a cheap Machine Mart slide hammer to pull the shaft and bearing out.
Thanks for the link, will sneak a look at lunchtime!
